Hi

Im going on a roadtrip with my Z4 2006 N46 2 litre 81000 miles and want to make a bit more reliable. I was thinking of changing the exapnsion tank, coolant hoses and water pump...what make of expansion tank is best.

What else would you recomend to do.

Thanks

I opted for Nissens on mine having had good experiences with their stuff before. Only time will tell...

It was down to Mahle or Nissens for me this time, but Mahle didn't have the sensor included, which is the only reason I went Nissens

I've had a few Meyle ones in the past on E46s and don't remember them failing (I'd break them, but that's not the parts fault! :D ), but I've heard people speak badly of Meyle recently, so I didn't want to take that risk this time.

Don’t buy cheap… they don’t have snug connections

I tend to go for febi or above

If you are going all in on the engine bay…

Vanos seals and valve cover gasket
Water pump and thermostat plus expansion tank (if it’s an auto the gearbox thermostat too)
Beltsx2
Sparks
Oil and filter
Air filter
Cabin filter
Check engine mounts and clean your front scuttle out

Thanks Stuart

I think the sparks were done 10000 miles ago, but the belts as far as I know havent been done.yes the expansion tank is a weak one...what about coolant hoses? has my 2 N46 engine got a vanos unit then? what should I be looking for with the engine mounts? rubber crack?
cheers

N46 has two vanos solenoids at the front of the engine- worth pulling out and cleaning

Coolant hoses should be ok but be aware the o rings are the weak point

The engine mounts- it’s more a visual check- they compress over time but as they are filled with oil check for leaks

Ah ok you learn something every day I thought it was only the Six cylinder that has the Vanos and it looked fairly dificult to get at...

Ill check the O rings for anyleaks..

engine mounts ill have a looks aswell..

thanks alot appreciate it

You'll be able to find these for your engine too from that seller. Arrived in under a week to the UK from the USA. I find usually the pipe itself is ok, but the o-rings never reseal Ince disturbed

BMW wants £121 for the part. Ouch! But I think you get what you pay for and at least with BMW you get a warranty.

My febi tank lasted less than 900 miles before developing the same leak the original bmw tank took 100,000 miles to develop, the replacement bmw tank I put in has already done 3000 miles and hopefully gets close to what the original did.
