Part name under expansion tank

I am having a bit of trouble finding out a part name or number for the small cover for the spring that holds a small brass plug in place just under the expansion tank. I believe that I broke it when installing said tank. It has a slot on opposite sides that was degraded enough that it just crumbled. Is it supposed to be held in place by a tab on both sides or just one tab. It is part #6 on this diagram. I may have to also get the housing that it is attached to as well, #7 (although if I remember correctly mine isn't shaped quite like that part but has other hoses to it).

The diagram you show is for radiator mounting parts. Parts 10 and 11 are 'supporting parts' and fasten on to either end of the rad and then secure it in place inside the front panel.
Part 7 is 'bracket f.radiator' 17111436264.jpeg
and Part 6 is 'rubber buffer'17111178412.jpeg
You need to refer to the expansion tank sections on www.realoem.com
Is your car 2.2i, 2.5i or 3.0i ?

Oops, I guess those weren't the parts I needed after all. The piece I was looking for was what the expansion tank is connected to under it. It has a plastic cap with 2 slots in it and it is a retainer/cover for a compression spring that is holding a small plug in place in the housing. The housing also has I believe 2 hoses connected to it and it is also made of the same plastic as the expansion tank!
The cap that covers the spring has broken beneath both of the slots and am not sure if the housing has a catch on both sides for the slots or just the one side.

If it’s an auto it’s the thermostat that controls the cooling of the gearbox

Last time I picked one up they were fairly cheap from eBay

It is an '03 with the 2.5l and automatic. It is the housing that the expansion tank is coupled to underneath it, not the tranny cooler. If that is indeed the part (I thought maybe it was earlier) then it is able to be removed from that housing. What a dumb place to put another thermostat!!! Does it just get pulled out?

Finally got it all together so no leaks - had to put a "flat" o-ring on the one connection - but now there is another problem. If I drive it just across town it will over-heat and the electric fan goes into overdrive. The problem is that there isn't any leak anywhere and tests out at almost 15psi and holds it. The fan also shuts off immediately when I turn it off. Very rarely is the level low! But it will heat up into the red area. I also replaced the thermostat a while back and am wondering if it isn't a faulty one. Any ideas are appreciated.
Thank you very much
Butch

A faulty thermostat will throw an error code, so get your codes read to rule this out. Otherwise it sounds as though you have an airlock.
