What is your sDrive23i's highest MPG?

I have been using a hire car given by my employer for over 2 years now (all commuting to work as business travel), so my nearly 3-year-old Z4 has only done 13k miles.

Due to to joint venture with another company, I will have to reapply for my current job, either based at Central Regional Office (Syston, Leicester) or Head Office (Solihull). I will get travel allowance (40 pence per mile) for the first 12 months, then I will have to either relocate (relocation expense paid by employer) or travel to work without allowance. The round trip is 160 miles a day.

If I have to use my Z4, I estimate my fuel bill is more like £30 a day (based on 33.2 mpg/136.90 pence per litre). It will cost me £600 a month  . Alternatively, if I change my car and get something like, 120d or 320d M Sport. It will save me about £12.50 a day (based on 58.9 mpg/141.7 pence per litre).

Does anyone drive 23i manual on motorway daily? My journey between J11 and J21A on M1 is normally free flow, as I travel northbound to work and southbound after work. The offical extra urban for 23i is 45.6 mpg, is it really achievable?

I have a 23i 2.5 z4 at 27mpg
I also have a 318 at 51 mpg
I don't think I am a hard driver, just normal driving
Good luck

As you ksher, my weekly commute to Bristol involves 200 miles each way, my 3.0 (same fuel consumption as the 2.5l) averaged 37 mpg which included about 100 miles of town driving. If you take it easy on the gas on the motorway and stick to 70 mph the fuel economy is very good. I drive the Merc in a similar way and am getting an average of 43 mpg........makes me think that BMW straight six is pretty damn good

Bit of a difficult position to be in. Commuting that distance every day, even if you can work the odd day from home, is too much. And it isn't just fuel costs but servicing, tyres, insurance and wear and tear all increases with mileage too, plus your Z4 will be worth less the higher the mileage.

Fuel costs are only going one way, so in 5 years time it might be costing £800 or £900 a month. And after 24 months the Inland Revenue treats temporary workplaces differently and you can't claim back anything as business mileage.

TBH if you really like the current company and prospects then probably a relocation is the better option, and if you don't want to do that, then a change of company would be the answer.

Highest I got out of my 23i 2.5 manual was on a 400mile trip through Spain, sticking to aroud 65mph managed to get 39.4 mpg but on average general driving it went down to around 34mpg :driving:
Just changed to a 23i 2.5 automatic and not getting anywhere near the above figures so stick with the manual

23i 2.5 & I do a 200 mile round trip on the M6/M5 Sutton Coldfield to Bristol twice a week. The best I've managed so far is only 33mpg. Usual trips are 30.3mpg. I won't pretend I drive at 70mph, or that I'm light on the accelerator... but what fun would that be?!

ksher, are you sure your 40p per mile is for the full 12 months with no limit cap? I thought that HMRC guidelines state that after 10k miles it becomes a taxable benefit at that rate for anything over 26p (off the top of my head), so there may be further tax implications for you to consider in your costing calcs (although there will be some slight tax due back to you on the first 10k miles as the HMRC rate is 45p not 40p)?

I get 33mpg in my 23i manual driving about my home area. On longer journeys I get 35mpg (mostly country roads). I don't tend to thrash the car but I don't drive particularly slowly either. Last summer a friend and I travelled from Scotland to the Channel and from there down through France to Spain. On the motorway down to the Channel (two up with luggage 70mph with cruse control on) we were getting 37mpg (top up) and overall 35mpg (top down and aircon on) for the 4000 mile trip which included going over the French Alps once and the Pyrenees twice.

I'd vote for getting another car (in an ideal world to run alongside the zed but only you can make that call... obviously harder if you have to replace it). It would be a shame to put such high mileage on what is currently a very low mileage car.

Petrol prices are only going to go up and in 12 months, you start doing your calculations on 145 or 155p/litre and the numbers will only get worse.

What about a Polo bluemotion sort of thing?... I'd imagine the fuel saving could justify a good £portion of the car?

Hi,I think we work for the same company, well I used now going to the new one. I got 10k on mine never done more the 34mpg. City drive 27 to 28. Motorway 34. Good luck with the job.

Best i've seen at a steady gentle foot cruise at 70mph is 47mpg.
To and from work 10min street stop start and 10min dash down country lanes is 30-33mpg.

OK, I've got a 3.0i but I think the consumption figures are similar/identical. Today I drove from Shropshire to Somerset and back, which entailed mostly motorway but with some A and B roads and a smattering of country lanes. I averaged 40.9 with some fairly gentle driving - i.e. changing gear when I'd rather put my foot down and sticking at 70-75 on the motorway. I have to say for a 3 litre lump, or 2.5 for that matter, that's a pretty impressive show by BMW. :)

Return drive London - Cardiff (350ish miles along M4) with cruise mostly set to 75 gave me 36 mpg according to the car... Not that impressive I don't think, I'd have hopes for 40+ personally given the reputation for economy these engines have...

I have a 2.5 auto, on a regular trip from just north of Bristol to central Cardiff I average 35mpg in the rush hour including a reasonable amount of start stop in Cardiff. Quite happy with that from a Zed.
