What is "Transport Mode"?

As title, an interesting question.........

So some details, mine is a 2011 23i (and in case someone doesn't know, that's a 2.5ltr straight six, normally assperaited) and I've had it for five years now. I've always thought it was in decent condition with a decent amount of "go" in it, but not a huge amount. I have, however, thought that the steering feel was, well lets be honest, crap! Far too light for a sports car, now it does tighten up a bit in Sport+, but still feels lacking.

So you're probably thinking now "what's all this to do with Trrasnport Mode?", a good question. Well I had mine hooked up to ISTA yesterday and one of the things it came up with was that it said it needed to come out of "Transport Mode", so I went with it and alas didn't get the chance to take it for a run afterwards until today. Well, although I've not had the chance to give it a proper run yet (I just drove across town), I'll do that in the morning to work, I have noticed though that the steering feels a hell of a lot more responsive and taught!

So, what is Transport Mode, and what does it mean to our Z4's? Is this just a coincidence that my steering feels much better after five years of it feeling crap or is this something to do with it? Can anyone shed any light on this? :driving:

Probably a sort of storage mode to limit battery drain when being transported. Perhaps good idea to put car in this mode if in storage a long time. Stops constantly waking up to check systems.
Think i have seen as option on the Foxwell obd reader.

Thanks, someone on the FB group page has mentioned that the steering is put into a lighter stage in Transport Mode, so this could be it, strange though that everything else was working OK.
The drive to work this morning was nice on the steering, no extra power though which would have been nice, but hey-ho you can't have everything :D

Certainly needs to be light at low speed, without servotronic option my cars steering is really heavy.
If lighter would be certainly easier to get on transporters.

Yes definitely.
Glad I was in ISTA now, first time using it properly as I finally have my power supply up and running. Nice piece of kit and gave it a good bill of health

I didn't know it made the steering lighter.

From what I have read I just thought it stopped certain things like the HRW, A/C, and high heater fan speeds working to avoid draining the battery when the car is only going to be sitting around.

It's supposed to be deleted when the dealer does the PDI, but for some reason it often just gets disabled (maybe that is easier) so if the battery gets really low it can reactiviate and stays activated even after the battery has been replaced.

I wonder if the ebrake failures are the system going into transport mode.
Might be that wheels are chocked for transport with brake off.
