What is this ..and why does it flap ??

Hi All

Just noticed that flapping noise coming from engine. Had a look under the hood and found this flap (see pictures below) it appears to be flapping againt the wheel arch. I have never noticed it before. Any of you smart people know what it's for ??

Looks like the drain outlet for the windscreen cowel.
It's right down at the bottom rear of the engine bay on the NS.

Thanks CJ not sure why it's flapping with the engine on? Seems to be air blowing out? Now seems even stranger as surely no air should be coming from there.
Does anyone else's do this?

never noticed the noise, but tip some water around the front of your car and it comes out. i wouldnt think the flapping is anything to worry about, is it really that loud?

the end of it flaps open to allow water through, are you sure its not loose?

I suspect it's all part of the same system of air intake system, blower, rainwater drain etc. and are linked into the same point, so not surprising a bit of air blows out of it.

I'm surprised that is flapping as suggest you look elsewhere for the noise

Yeah it is strange but it's definatly this as can see it when have the bonnet up if hold it no noise! Does the flap need to be there? I'm sure it must serve a purpose but not sure what as can't see anything entering from that position.

Rip it off and wait for a code... $300 later BMW will replace it for you.

Had the same "problem" on my old Z4, I just carved it a bit with a knife in the bottom part of the flap-thing so it could move free... noise gone and problem solved
