i have quick questions about remapping the car
i assume thats some kind of remapping the ECU ?
what does that do to my car pros and cons

and how much will it cost me ?

thanks

Before someone more knowledgeable comes along..

You're right it is mapping the ECU with a different tune to get more power or better efficiency. However most gains can be had on a turbo'd car not a NA one like the Z4. I think BMW got most of the power out of it.

Cons - cost and you're messing with something for little or no demonstrable benefit (despite what it says on the tin!)
Pros - :tumbleweed:

This may not be right, but I believe that some bigger mods can require a remap to get them workig properly, full exhaust systems, etc. IIRC it's because you're changing the way the engine's "breathing" - but it will always be stated in the tech docs. That may just be for really bikes though, or anything that highly tuned.

there are good and bad remaps.

the bad kind comes from the people trying to make quick money, prices vary from approx £200 upto £700, all they will do is apply a generic fuel map that was created on 1 car with the same ECU/Engine combo, you may get small gains but they are useless realyl and can be damaging to the engine if they are very bad.

the good kind are made from scratch specifically for your car and your car only. prices vary massivly, i paid £150 for mine on my Marea Turbo but i was fortunate enough to know someone local who knew their stuff.

the process involves creating a map that maintains a (as close to) perfect Air/Fuel ratio all the way through the rev range, usually takes a few hours and can be done either on a rolling road or out on the road.

some people will take you out on the road when applying the cheap generic maps to appear more authentic, dont be fooled if they are just using a laptop and nothing else.

I'm unsure if the Z4 already has a wideband lambda fitted but i doubt it, someone creating a true map will have to put a pipe up the exhaust with a wideband lambda attached to get the correct ratio.

for an N/A car like the Z4 you will be looking at 8-10HP MAX, it will make the car smoother and the power band may become wider.

on turbo charged cars gains are usually 20-40bhp but can vary more.

Waste of money unless on a turbo. The difference will be so little - the main effect will be the placebo one and after a couple of weeks that will of worn off. I have had remaps on a few cars and the only ones where it seemed worthwhile were all turbocharged, and even now I question what the point is? On the road at least?

It's all a matter of what you want. I personally think they're worth every penny, even on non-turbo cars, as it's not a straightforward as simply trying to up the max power. My car is smoother with better pick up across all the rev range and was transformed by a map.

Just by 1p worth.
