What is my sat nav doing?

So, I drive from Bedfordshire to Happisburgh in Norfolk at the weekend. The outward journey was fine and the sat nav appeared to take us on the right route, at least it concurred with Google maps.

On the way home it took us a really crazy route, right down to the M25 and back up. Once we realised what it was doing we changed direction to try and force the correct route but still no joy. We ended up having to use the iPhone maps to help us out. When trying to set up a new route on the nav it just stopped directing entirely?! No idea how to get that working again. We just had a map with no directions or guidance. It probably heard my friend and I cursing it prefusely and decided to retaliate ;)

Why would it choose such a different route on the way back? It's crazy.

I have 2012 maps and v32

To be fair, google maps shows 14 minutes difference between the two routes so there's not all that much in it 'on paper'. May have just picked up some old traffic info on the other route?

Google maps doesn't show the M25 as a route. I only see two routes and neither go anywhere near it.

I didn't even know it used traffic data?! It clearly wasn't doing that because both the M11/M25 were congested.

The only reason your nav would do this is if you asked it to divert when doing your return route.

If you notice this and simply try and cancel it by stopping the navigation and starting it up again by selecting the route again - it will remember the past diversion. This is my mind is a software defect in the nav/maps. The workaround is to select a different route type - for example, select short and then flick back to fast - this clears any diversion and does the "standard" type route for either FAST or SHORT.

One of the many things mine would do irregularly.

It also tried to 'reverse' the route once or twice, and diverted me 30 miles around a block only to bring me back on at the junction I'd come off :headbang:

Use a TomTom instead as it lets me customise the POIs, add waypoints, plan routes (albeit with the help of Google Maps / Tyre), mark map errors, block specific roads/junctions, and my Live HD version gives me plenty of jam/delay info (uses info from other units travelling on the same roads, not just the TMC info from the OEM system).

Did you have the fastest vs shortest route preference set up as expected. Also if it was receiving traffic updates, or had old traffic data in memory it would affect the route

It was set to fast route. How can you clear old traffic info?

Simples. Tune it to classic fm, or put it to aux or cd and the tuner will automatically update traffic info. You'll see TMC go green at the bottom of the screen to show its connected to the service

And switch dynamic routing option off as that will automatically integrate traffic in the route.

There is a check box which says "dynamic".

Drove me mad when I just had the car that it would do the weirdest routes and diversions, until I found that "dynamic" section.

Came with software version V32 I think.

and yes - I have not dusted the inside after our last run so comments you can shove up your ar*e :D

I know, I know. Sometimes I have to work :)

Job for tomorrow though. Need to try to get the high bits mounted on the framework. Think Mrs PVR will have to make an appearance to help out :D
