What is it about 40mph?

For the umpteenth time I've had to follow a car doing 40mph oblivious to everything around them. One country road there were 5 changes of speed limit; 30; 60(NSL); 40; 60(NSL); 30 and they went at 40-42 through the lot. Nowhere to really overtake and anyway I wasn't impressed with the unpredictable lines they were taking (that'll be wandering over the road).

In contrast French, Spanish and German drivers tend to drive at and rarely over the speed limit and make 'good progress' as the IAM say!

If you do overtake the British bumblies they seem to take offence...

So what is so special about 40mph?

This group of drivers are closely related to the 60mph centre lane of the motorway brigade.

It takes nerves of steel to hold dead on 60 in that lane while being underpassed, flashed and hurried along by assorted trucks.

Two clear givaway signs of these drivers - (apart from the speed) they drive with a vice like grip on the wheel using both hands at all times and adopt a very forward driving position with the chin close the steering wheel and arms well folded to prevent any ability to turn quickly.

Their 'club' insignia is a traditional or ill suited hat.

mmm, and I always thought it was the "volvo" badge ;)

Hey, hey, hey.... I used to have a Volvo S60 T5 and it was either at or slightly above the speed limit!! :P

Sometimes a lot above :D

In the US, the outerwear usually consists of heavily wrinkled skin, eyeglasses, white hair, and be living in or heading to Florida. :stir:

A friend of mine said that his grandfather always drove at 40 MPH ... on the highway or on a driveway, it was always the same speed :-)

Where I live you have to put up with the usual idiots who think their Golf or Ibiza is the new WRC test car except that they forget that the brakes and suspension are more suited to a ride on lawnmower. The great thing is the look of shear horror and panic on their faces when they realise that they are not going to make it round the curve they just started into and jump all over said lawnmower brakes to avoid driving off the road.

But yes the rest of the drivers are the usual types with the bumper stickers saying things like "my weekend car is a winnebago" and " All good drivers smoke pipes"
