\I KNOW WHAT CLAY IS, MY QUESTION IS what IS CLAY ?, Is it made purely for cleaning cars or is it something else that is ALSO good for cleaning cars? I mean its wildly expensive so was wondering if bought in large quantities its cheaper, would blue tac or something else do the same job ? any suggestions

CLAY in the car cleaning form is made to clean cars. Don't fancy rubbing blue tac on my car! You'd need a few packs too!

It's not that expensive - I got a cheap Megs quick clay kit for about £15 from Halfrauds with a bottle of Quick Detailer and a single starter level clay bar in it. Used about 3/4 of a bar on the car (broke it in half just in case I dropped one bit, and to make it go further, chucked it all afterwards though) and have a decent amount of detailer left.

I know that if you get serious about it there are different grades of clay, but I know feck all about it so started simple - I am guessing someone on here will know what is actually special about it. Was worth the 45 mins it took as my paintwork now feels glassy smooth.

i have my doubts about bluetac too what i meant is its got a similar feel and wondered if anyone else could think of anything else that might work

Guy on here has used Blu-tac :

And from the same site, info on what clay is, how to use it, FAQs... If I had read this before today I'd probably have done a better job on my own car

after using the bilt hamber clay i would say on first impression it was more like frozen puff pastry and then after using it i would say it was like chewing gum in the way it went stringy and had to be worked to go back together.

Excellent article - thanks for the link

I bought the Megs quick clay kit. It removed the surface grime.
The small block supplied just about did the car.
Thought that a piece of plasticine and Fairy liquid would probably do the same job!
