WHAT IS A LEGAL NUMBER PLATE

Having bought a personalised number for the Zed we have been looking to get some plates made up. We have found some we like (Halfords look terrible.) on the web
There seems to be a lot of can's and cannot as far as the legal requirements go.
We would like a logo but seems you can only have GB,Euro,UK,Eng (or Welsh,Scottish and NI) and a Border plus BMW logo. Do you need standard UK letter size or can you use anything very similar. I realise spacing has to be standard.
Anyone fallen fouls of the regs or ideas how to have something slightly different.

Yep unfortunately that's what i thought,

It will have to be something similar to what we have with the Euro Logo on it. At least it add a bit of colour.

when you say you have bought a personalised plate.....do you mean one which actually spells something meaningful? i.e. BOB or something you have to manipulate to get what you want? i.e BO13 with 1&3 closer than permitted to make BOB?

If the latter, certainly anything you do will be illegal. If the former, as long as it is the regulation size, font, space etc.....rock on.
 
The only thing i got pulled at MOT for my plates was no information where they were made as i like a plain plate just letters and number so next MOT will get a cheap set made up.
 
i have a side badge (Taz) on mine, as yet i have never had an issue, but i know i am taking the chance, it will fail an MOT when that comes around
 
The number plate has meaning for us otherwise there is no point in getting one! imho

We do not have to manipulate the letters to spell anything other than what's there so that is OK. But as it is only one letter, one number and then 3 letters it looked a bit lost on a plane plate. The other half wants a big BMW logo on it although i think they will know what it is. :oops:

Good luck with the MOT Taz, i read on pistonheads about the garage ripping one off and charging the guy to replace it....... :x
 
For a 5 digit plate you can do as I have and narrow it down.
The regs specify edge and border spacing, not total plate size.

Easy enough to make a smaller carrier and the end result looks much sleeker.
