What intake options do we have for Z4M?

Hi guys

I got my Z4M roadster 3 months ago. So far I have: done a basic underside refurb, replaced the leaking diff seal and replaced the exhaust with an aftermarket exhaust.

All well so far.

Next is the intake. Currently it is standard. I come from 1990's jap cars. For those cars it is normal to replace the OE airbox and filter with an exposed cone-type filter. It didn't really add any power, but gave a lovely deep intake sound.

I noticed on this car the air sensor is part of the OE airbox. This means that you can't just replace the airbox with a cone filter.

So what is the aftermarket intake etiquette with the Z4M? What are our options?

Ideally will be looking for something that A) does not reduce power B) adds lots of nice sound.

Thanks!

C) empties your wallet

There’s quite a few and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of options from those more knowledgeable

You can just replace the airbox with a cone filter...as the air sensor is in the rubber neck after the airbox.

Other than a basic 'ram-air' or K&N cone filter, you can go for (in ascending price order) AFE intake, Simota carbon intake, Evolve/Eventuri carbon intake, Gruppe-M intake, Karbonius carbon plenum replacement, CSL-style carbon plenum & snorkel + alpha-n tune.

Alternatively, you could go for a velocity stack system...but you might need ear-plug/defenders for that :P

Brilliant feedback, thanks!

Please see pic. I checked and the black plastic pipe that the air sensor is plugged into is definitely part of the air box moulding...

Simota carbon intake
Have tried searching for this but cannot find any places listing it for sale? Is it M3 specific?

the Simota website lists a cold air intake but it looks too long -any ideas?

From my order email ist was model CF610-32

But I sent it back for a refund after a few weeks as it kept causing my car to die on full throttle applications. Was told it wouldn't need a remap originally, and then told that it 'might need a remap' after all :(

Yes, you are quite right. I think due to a combination of all my air-boxes having a MAF tube in the kit...and me not seeing my own car's engine bay for a few years (don't ask), I've obviously forgotten what it actually looked like  :P

All the intake kits I've seen (not sure about the cone filter ones) do have a replacement tube/collar for the MAF sensor. You may even be able to buy the MAF tube by itself to add a correctly-sized cone filter on???

However, I'd still recommend getting something that has some sort of airbox housing.

FYI - I've decided to 3d print my own intake. Bit weird I know. Just finishing it up.

I will eventually get the Eventuri I think, but with new baby just arrived, no way I can get 800 big ones past wife at moment.

Will update with pics or vid soon.

I have recently acquired an Eventuri intake for my Z4M Coupe and am very happy with the improved throttle response and sound. The driving experience has been transformed, the car feels more eager to be driven hard and is much happier approaching the redline than it was with the standard airbox. I imagine the sound would be even more enjoyable in a roadster!

Yup I'll be getting Eventuri later in the year for sure.

Eventuri is the way to go from a sound point of view. It's brilliant.

Having said that I have not experienced the AFE which has a much larger air filter. The only thing that worries me about the eventuri is the little simota air filter.
