What Helmet.....?

So, I'm going to give this Track Day lark a try next weekend. Unfortunatly I now need to get my hands on a Helmet as there will be none for rent.
I have been looking on the internet and started a thread on Pistonheads but I just can't decide what to do. :(
I don't need anybody else to quote "£5 helmet for a £5 head", I understand that but I just don't have hundreds of pounds sitting in my pocket at the moment.

"Full Face" or "Open Face"...?
I would prefere the Open Face to be honest but many people recomend the Full Face as they are required for single seaters and open top cars. (Note - new convertables like the Z4 you can use Open Face).

There are many on the market but then we have to ensure that it meets the specific standards: For a British Track Day the Helmet must be MSA Approved

"A new ruling introduced by the MSA in July 2008 means that helmets that are "BS6658-85 A Approved" are only valid for MSA Competition Events until 31st December 2009.
After this date your helmet must have a Fireproof lining and be to BS6658-85 Type A/FR Approval (Red Label)."

Any Track Day Drivers on here...? What do you use and what would you reccomend....?
Anybody know of any 2nd hand MSA approved lids for sale? :)

Trackdays are not a "competition event ", no timing allowed so something like this should be ok.

I use an OMP full face with Type A blue label and have been told on trackdays it will be fine next year for tracking, but not for racing.

The MSA don't regulate trackdays, so their yes or no on a helmet is irrelevant.

Most track day organisers simply state that the helmet has to be UK type approved with a BSI kitemark.

You need to find out what the minimum spec the track day organiser specifies and if they say it has to be a £1000 helmet then you want to know why.

I bought an OMP 'Tourismo' semi-open one about 10 years ago for £70 and it's still going strong, and the labels/stickers have never been checked in all that time (although it's a Snell 99 spec or something according to the label).

Here we go. Sod those people saying you need an expensive helmet. You don't.

I have no experience with track days, but being a motorcycle rider, I'd hit up the bike store... Find someone who is knowledgeable, they'll help you get a proper fitting helmet. Stay safe of the track!

As Kaide says, get yourself to a bike shop and get yourself one that fits 1st, then look at how much you want to pay. They start at under £ 100 .

Cheers guys,

All sorted now. I have gone for one off the internet after trying on loads at the local bike shop.
It was £100 and meets the MSA requirements (not fire-resistant however).

Donnington Here We Come..!

So I'm going to piggy back and ask a question on my own,
The "american spec" one I used here in the states is a uhm (if my memory is working) Snell A 2500.
Will that be ok for use in the UK? or is there different specs across the pond?

That'll be fine. Snell is the spec that some Track Day Organisers are considering demanding in future.

I started off thinking that it would be a simple question but there are all kinds of rules and regs...
My research found this:

The Snell K98 and K2005 can be used for CIK and MSA Karting Events ONLY. It is NOT suitable for use in any other discipline.
Note Snell-FIA CMR2007 is also valid for Karting but NOT for car sport.
SNELL SA2005 and SNELL SA2000 are ok.

Is the European ECE 22-05 helmet standard accepted by the MSA?
The European ECE 22-05 Regulation is not accepted by the FIA, CIK or MSA.

The following ARE accepted:

BS6658 Type A/FR
BS6658 Type A
SNELL SA2005
SNELL SA2000
FIA 8860-2004
SFI Foundation 31.1A, 31.2A

Hope it helps

When are up at donnington - only live down the road might come and check the day out if it is free to watch.
