What have you done to your car today?

I taxed my z4 for the first time since November. Even though I had my car connected to a Noco trickle charger since I laid it up for the winter the battery was not holding charge so I’ve had a quick trip to Europart for a replacement and on Thursday I am putting my car in for a small service.

Bumper off. New fog lights, repainted slam brace and replaced some rusty old bolts. And gave the engine bay a little clean.

Had to acclimatise it to our lovely Scottish summer while the new boiler was being fitted in the garage.

It's been 3 years since I replaced the brake fluid but my moisture meter said the moisture content was less than 2%. That didn't seem to warrant the hassle of removing the wheels and bleeding each individual caliper, I sucked all the fluid out of the reservoir and replaced it with fresh. Over time, that will bring the moisture content down further.

My drivers window was stuttering, it would go down 2" and then go back up again and then move 1" down and stop, passenger side had no issues. There was no grinding or knocking so I figured it was the switch rather than the mechanism.
Took the switch unit out of the door and completely stripped it down. Gave everything a good dose of contact spray and used ear buds to clean all the small bits and the rubber "membrane ", reassembled everything, it was a bit fiddly tbh but with more patience than I normally display it went back together. Moment of truth was plugging it back in...
It now works perfectly 👌

Treated it to some Millers EE performance and a new filter, it’s made a big difference to the sound of the engine at idle and seems to have got rid of a noise I thought was my diff, must have been the filter.

I've been getting Valvetronic-related codes for a while now on the little 2.0l.
Finally took the leap of faith and did something about. Bought new VDO Valvetronic motor and eccentric shaft sensor and gaskets.
Yesterday I took the top off the engine and replaced the motor and sensor. I'm definitely no Edd China but it wasn't too terrifying a job. Getting the sensor off on the 2.0l is a tricky job, mind you. The old gasket seal for the sensor was shot with lots of oil escaping around it as per the pictures.
Very satisfying to see the 'No faults' code at the end of the day.

Installed the evolve intake and scoop

Apologies for the dirty car: went on a long trip to get it and installed it the following day without cleaning the car before taking the photos

I let my daughter drive my Zed today. :o Only Ten years since I bought it. My sons driven it several times, but this was her first ever go. She loved it. :driving:

We got to a car park and I played the bonnet game with her. I got out and started running my finger up the bonnet from the near side corner. She had to tell me as soon as she could see the end of my finger. Then I told her to get out and come look where my finger was between her and the front of the car. About 2 ft from her and 4 ft from the front was the answer. Always a good game to play with any one driving a Zed for the first time . Lets them know just how much of that lovely bonnet they can't see.

Fitted another of those pesky bonnet rubbers. I gorilla glued this one on.

Rain stopped play. But before that I managed to:

Change the rear shocks- one was bad the other ok. Refitted with reinforcing plates.
Replaced the drop links- see pic
Replaced the ARB bushes- yuk they were bad

Cant recall who it was who recommended last time I changed them using longer ARB bolts but dug those out and saved a lot of swearing- cheers!

Was about to move onto the rear discs and pads but the rain intervention meant I spent a few mins sorting my bolt/clip tin out (been putting it off for ages) and found some rear shelf clips I'd been looking for (yes!). As its carried on raining I've headed in to watch the footy.

Finally, I hope that there is a place reserved in hell for anyone who over tightens the disc retaining bolt. Both are proper tight so I am sure I will strip those tomorrow making a 1 hr job 5.

Onwards

Stuart
