What have you done to your car today?

Gave mine a little pat to celebrate 10 years of ownership. It's looking a little sad at the moment though, hasn't moved since before Christmas.

Went a bit crazy today. After waiting 2 weeks for dry weather I finally replaced the driverside regulator. Not difficult but fiddly. I also replaced the nearside weather seal. Tomorrow I plan to inspect the roof seals and see where the wind noise is coming in.

Not done yet, but these arrived. Plan is to sand down and spray either gloss, matt or satin black, can't decide!

Will be doing the steering wheel silver parts to match, along with recovering.

Anyone got them in satin or matt black I can see? Think gloss will show fingerprints too much

Took my E86 for a drive in sport mode to bleed the HVAs that tick a bit when cold after a couple of months of only driving to Tesco and back . Sounds much better now.

Plus it was fun!

Sorted out my non working drivers door outside handle, had a good look at Youtube videos on the subject before I started, once the door card was off it was a bit of a fiddle but managed to take the outer handle off and take out the actuator and the handle mounting frame from inside the door. New cable fitted and lever that it pulls on was adjusted by bending the tab on it so it tightened the cable up a bit more. Tested it off the car before I put it all back together. It would appear the old cable had streched a little or the tab on the operating arm on the acutuator had bent over time causing slack and not enough pull movement on the actuator to trip the lock.

Cleaned it and today is MOT day!.... passed again with no advisories :w00t:

Currently drying out my soggy carpets and steam cleaning them. Wife not particularly happy that I’m doing it in the lounge though :D

Finally managed to change the starter motor at the weekend; managed to do it without removing the intake manifold but there was a lot of swearing and scraped hands involved, plus I managed to get the new one 90% of the way on then ran into trouble getting the guide peg to slide in. Ended up having to take everything back out and grind the peg down a mm or so to make the job go easier. All working now though :D

Regular startup as he is sitting under the cover and waiting for spring. :) I start it up occasionally, every few days, and if it is dry, I drive it.

I too make a point of starting it and letting it come up to temp at least once a week. Only looked at it today though.

I do this too. If the gritters haven't been out I take her for a run to get the rust off the discs and blow the cobwebs away. Doesn't do them any good standing for long periods. :driving:

This actually does MORE HARM to your car rather than just leaving it alone. Only start the car when you intend to use it properly.

No, it doesn't, I talked with several mechanics about it, and they all agree, it is good for an engine (if not fully conservated) to start it up once in a while.

Just to be clear, you don't rev it, you just start it and leave it to idle for around 20-30 minutes (I often sit in the car and make some calls or something to pass the time). Why it is good - the temperature will go up in the intake, exhaust and the engine, at temperatures in 0C and minuses, it is good as car like that, outisde is protected by that heat for several days.

Option B is if you don't want to use it, then the battery is out, the oil is drained in the spring when you want to use the car.

For instance, in upcoming several days here in Croatia, the temperature will go well above 10C during the day, and it will be dry, no rain, so I will drive my Z4 as much as I can. Next week when it will go rain and lower temperatures, it will sit under the cover with occasional 1-2 start up-s.

Also, BMW's has a problem with exhausts that are only sitting outside, with water condensation, so it is recommended to warm the pipes up.

If I had a garage, it would be the whole another story, but I don't. :(
