What have you done to your car today?

20210125_095207.jpg

Not done yet, but these arrived. Plan is to sand down and spray either gloss, matt or satin black, can't decide!

Will be doing the steering wheel silver parts to match, along with recovering.

Anyone got them in satin or matt black I can see? Think gloss will show fingerprints too much

Having a full back axle refurb at RBM

Having just done most of that myself can I suggest you replace the prop centre bearing and the centering bush at the front of the prop where it takes the gearbox output at the same time. Cheap as chips to buy, but a lot of work to get to again. Not worth not doing.

MOT and oils today so off to RBM. Looking forward to the 90 minute drive and seeing my lovelies on the ramp for the yearly once over in between major services that only an expert like Ross can do. :driving:

Look like from photos that the drivers side rear brake line could do with being changed while it is easy to do, I can see the near side has been done already
Thanks will get that done

Think I has been noted but just incase

Have a look at the rubber bush at the gear box end and the centre bearing and support
It would be a good time to remove and re grease the O2 sensors (wish I had when it was on the floor off the car) in case you ever need to replace them makes it easier.

There also looks like a bit of rust starting that could be sorted out while everything is off the car

I shot blasted every thing and powder coated all the steel components that I could remove before rebuilding

The heat shields are repairable I used carbon kevlar cloth and resign to glue a patch on this has worked well

Fitted a new roof motor. Old one has been playing up for some time now.

Today I had to transport my non-starting z 40 miles to my dad’s workshop.

1. Hired Trailer
2. Messed about getting the trailer reversed into my drive and up to my z
3. Realised my brakes were bound on due to the handbrake being on for the last 3 weeks
4. Find out I don’t have a towing eye for the car. Try all other towing eyes from my other cars + neighbors - none fit
5. Faff around trying to bounce the brakes free
6. Resort to wrapping a nylon strap around the engine bay brace bars and attaching the trailer winch to that strap
7. Brakes unbind
8. Front bumper scrapes into the ramp
9. Jack up one side and placing a narrow length of wood for the wheel to travel up
10. Finally get the car out to my dad’s
11. Lunch
12. Clear the few inches of snow off the slope leading to the workshop
13. Attempt to reverse the trailer up the hill resulting in a huge cloud of clutch smoke - get 2/3s of the way there
14. Attach ratchet strap around a 3ft wide tree stump. Attach chain hoist to strap. Attach another ratchet strap between hoist and car (we now have a towing eye fitted from neighbours BMW)
15. Winch car about 10 feet up the hill
16. Return the trailer
17. Dinner
18. Reposition straps and winch the car into the work shop
19. Beer
20. Bed with aching muscles

But since you had fun, that’s all that matters, right?

Sorry that its on your part, but this was quite a funny read!

Glad you got it sorted within a day though, could have been worse (maybe)!

Just got a text from my dad; he took the battery out to charge (starter motor had gone but the battery also died us yesterday) and he tells me the towing eye was tucked away behind the battery :headbang:

I looked there but obvs not hard enough...

Coming on a bit nowC76426B1-B4ED-41FE-8E0A-70EA93B400A3.jpeg

Finally got round to replacing the eccentric shaft sensor. A fairly big job, and the first time I have done any engine work so was pleased when it started up and INPA read no errors! I've made a small thread here detailing my experience.

Has transformed the responsiveness and eagerness of the car. Quite how something as important as valve lift being disabled doesn't throw a check engine light bemuses me. To the passing eye, the car was fine beforehand (but I knew it was a bit sluggish and fuel economy was poor). It was only plugging it into the C110 (and INPA) that confirmed the sensor was dead, and valves were at full lift.

Replaced the valve cover gasket, valvetronic motor gasket and eccentric shaft gasket also. I have heard the valve cover gasket is prone to failure, so hopefully I have saved a job for someone down the line!

The next time you have the bonnet open I can highly recommend taking the top engine cover off (just the 4 torx screws) and checking the Eccentric Shaft Sensor connector is dry and free from oil. Mine had the smallest, tiniest amount of residue in there. By the time the oil is in the connector, the sensor is usually buggered or on its way out. Running codes will confirm that this is the case, but if there is oil residue there even without codes the sensors days might be numbered.

Hope everyone is getting on alright during these times.

Installed Ray's Homura 2x7's, 19" staggered.

Repaired sticking passenger cup holder with judicious application of epoxy 😂
