What have you done to your car today?

Popped the 224’s on earlier in the week and gave a it a wash and hand wax today :D

Have new centre caps on order, but might stick with 107’s...

The photo is flattering to the 224’s... if I keep them they’ll be getting refurbished

I managed to break my brakes by driving 10 metres down the road. Was fine yesterday, although the dsc light has popped off and on a couple of times. Pulled away, then standard brake check, car kept rolling, ping and the handbrake warning light came on the dashboard. Parked it back up, brake fluid on the floor. Heart is saying it’s a rear pipe, mind is thinking ABS pump

Took it for a lovely drive this AM in the cool almost foggy air, then rotated the tyres and reset the air pressures.

I know, I know, but they look to be departing back to Germany tomorrow.....

This isn’t a high spec car, but it’s in such nice condition that I feel I need to keep it ‘original-ish’

....and I’m probably going to put the 107’s on for that reason :poke:

I had the bearings replaced on my recently acquired MC today. The car just ticked 77,000 miles and I wanted it done as preventative maintenance.

A big thank you to e40sht from m3 cutters who did the work for me, he is an ex BMW Park Lane technician who is very thorough and knowledgeable.

Built and fitted this gorgeous heat shield for my cold air intake. Wrapped in gold thermal insulation and have seen my mpg go up by 5! (From 22mpg to 27.4mpg) Waiting for a longer trip to see how far up it'll actually go. This is the highest it's ever been since I've had the car (2 years).

Hi. I’m wondering about your intake. Would you recommend it? Does the car feel different and how does it sound?

Yeah it's brilliant. Nice suck-y woosh sound as the car revs up. Feels like it takes up a little better too, and it's been on there for a year or two now and has performed brilliantly throughout.

CDV removed, DISA valve overhauled, Ramair induction kit fitted, bumper resprayed and refitted. As well as 2xcite headlights also fitted recently.

I set an electric mouse trap under it.
Thumbs-up shariff - way to step up on the preventive maintenance...... Enjoy every rev to shift mark.

Used it as a speed boat

On the M62 and the heavens opened, for about 4 mins at one point it was definitely aquaplaning.

Useful pics and a good move. Bang-on as expected for the mileage, I reckon - no significant pitting/scoring and some copper coming through on about half of them.

Why did the bearings need doing so early?

From what I have found out about this issue is,
BMW when designing the S54 engine started with a 3.0ltr and bored it out to 3.2ltr so the pistons became larger in diameter, to make the rotating mass less they reduced the width of the connecting rod bearings narrower.

So the pressure on the rod bearing has now increased bigger area pressing on a smaller area.

They also used a bearing material that was not up to the job in the early S54’s fitted the the M3’s this was sorted with a recall later S54 engines in the Z4’s had the new rod bearing material

They also upped the weight of the oil to help with the issue now 10/60 this brings it’s own issues as it is too thick at start up and you have very high oil pressure for a few mins so hence the careful warm up phase of driving these cars.

Also sometimes the first owner does not have the mechanical sympathy as it is under warranty and only plans to keep for a couple of years so under their ownership everything is ok.

Time or distance between oil service is too long as the general public like new cars that don't need to a keep popping back to the garage so long service intervals became the norm

Also once the car is over the threshold to be an approved used BMW it is no longer sold by a BMW dealership and the subsequent owners are sort of on there own, so it is unlikely BMW will spend any time or money on out of “approved BMW” BMW only want to sell cars that maintain the brand

So as this issue becomes more understood the best way to avoid an engine rebuild is to replace the rod bearings and check the oil pump and relief valve before a failure

Just my thoughts/findings

Did the work yesterday

Oil and oil filter change

As I had bought the oil in 1 ltr bottles you need 4 ltrs to cover the min mark on a S54 engine
