Hi, I'm near Derby. Thought it might be the solenoid as it's supposed to lock/unlock with central locking. It just doesn't unlock. Just trying to remove the panel above the compartment to investigate but cant see how to do it.

Take a look at this, Page 4.
You don't actually need to take the whole thing off, just the middle-upper panel to reveal something like this

Then hopefully you'll be able to see whats the problem

Thanks kis :D just what I needed. Going to look at that over the weekend. Roof motor failed yesterday :headbang:
so have posted in the problems page. Will get it sorted one way or another

Managed to get to the solenoid that appears to be jammed closed, no wonder the manual pull cord didn't work! Its out of the car now so lloking for a replacement one of these:

Seems production was stopped at the end of 2003 so is there an upgrade available? Might just leave it out if nothing is available.

Dave, I take it that's the centre catch for the roof operating motor? You don't actually need it, in fact BMW removed it from the later cars. There is no way the hood can lift up as you are driving, it's too heavy.

Mike

No Mike, this is the solenoid that locks the centre cubby storage between the seat backs via the central locking. I'd have brought it up with you whilst I was there today but I think both of us had had enough today

Dave

Started the deep clean for ZedFest, so it's bumper and headlights off, for a good clean and polish.

Bodywork is part way through, with a final polish and wax this week. Calipers and wheel arches are scheduled for Saturday

Ooh, mine doesn't lock... Time to investigate..

Coming home tonight heading for the "finished" M3 fiasco the gantry told me just after J10 on the M25 that the M3 Westbound exit was closed (Shame it couldn't have told me that while I was still on the A3)!

But at least I could get off the M25 at J11 and have a bit of a hoon on the B-roads around Windlesham! Just reminded me of why I love my Z4!

Despite that the OBC is now showing 34.0 mpg (with an average speed of 40.5 mph)! It seems like the faster I go the more economical it becomes.

Not strictly today but over the weekend , I painted my calipers mettalic dark Blue. Excuse the poor picture, will try to get some better ones

Detected a new knocking!

Coming from the rear, but had new shocks and RTABs done a few weeks ago so can rule them out.

Can be heard when pushing the car down hard, and repeats a few times after the car seems to settle, suggesting it's something loose and knocking around?

Finally found a proper solution to those nasty plastic rivets that hold the edge of the front liners to the bumper! An M8 dome headed hex bolt fits perfectly, and actually screws itself into the hole in the bumper! However, I'll be reaching through the access flaps to fit a nyloc nut to the back of them, I got stainless bolts/nuts and they are currently drying after a few coats of satin black...

Also got some new pads as the fronts got decidedly noisy on my 370 mile road trip today, and started to smell after a bit of "enthusiastic" B road driving :) No wear light, but they do look a bit thin on the front, only had them for about 10 months/10k miles. Pagid last time, Brembo this time, was surprised how cheap they were @ Euro...

Up on the lift to fit all the bits tomorrow, oh and fitted the wipers I picked up a couple of weeks ago in Costco - Michelin "hybrid" for a fiver each!

Incorrectly assembled/torqued top mounts?

Sure I checked them multiple times to ensure they were right when installing, but I suppose it's not too big a job to check when I get the time.

It's odd, it almost seems intermittent, sometimes it doesn't seem to happen, or at least quiet enough that I don't hear it. Then other times it's irritatingly obvious!

Cleaned the hood drain holes, car usually lives in a garage but has spent a few days outside recently. Thought it would be worthwhile to check the drains. Both were damp and slightly clogged up. Cleaned out and now draining freely

Car tucked up and back in the garage by the weekend

I took my standard halo ring bulbs out and replaced them with LED's then coded out the dash warning. Looks so much nicer.
