What have you done to your car today?

Took the seats out to carpet clean underneath, they were grim. Took the time to clean all the seat rails, seats everything else I now had access. Then repaired a stone chip on a replacement wing that I may get on the car over the weekend.

Next up back brakes, and to stop the front from squealing every time I brake.

I need to remove my seats to clean under them; I’m guessing that it’ll not be all that pleasant under them after 16 years! Daft question, but will the car be in transport mode if I disconnect the battery to remove the seats? It’s the one that’s put me off so far.

No, I think the transport mode possibility is only when the battery has been disconnected for a couple of weeks.

Only seems to effect a handful of cars.

Brill, thanks. When I first viewed the car it was in transport mode after it’d had some work done and the chap I bought it from said it was because they’d disconnected the battery, hence my reluctance to do so again. Looks like the seats are coming out soon for a proper clean then!

As it has happened to you before I would have a backup plan. What part of the UK do you live in?

If you have a business trip on Monday then I wouldn't take the seats out on Sunday

No you’ll be fine, just remember to disconnect it before disconnecting the seat plug, you’ll need it connected to move the seats to access bolts if they’re electric.

I also didn’t take the seatbelt off the base of the seat just pulled it out and put it next to the car whilst I cleaned

Yesterday and this morning I've had my new wheels arrive, got tyres fitted, installed the front and rear stud conversion kit (finally) and mounted the front wheels (rear stud loctite is drying). Finally cracking on with getting my poor, static Z4 back to its former track loving glory.

A few pics of the wheels and studs (ignore the rusty discs, I'll be honing them or replacing them if they're too far gone).

Thanks, yes I had the faff of moving seats backwards and forwards to get at the bolts on my electric E92 seats.

Whilst I was under the car I took a look at the water pump and stat. It definitely looks like it could still be the original pump. I’ve no history of it being changed and it’s pretty cruddy. The car is on 118000 miles so decided to replace it and have put an order in to Autodoc. More tinkering to come then Happy days

Interested to hear how this goes as it's something I think I need to do on mine. Hoping the fact it's electrical makes it easier.......

It looks like it should be a simple job to me. There may be a surprise breakage along the way, but that’s old cars for you. The parts have arrived so I hope to crack on with it soon. Good price and service from Autodoc. I’ll report back and let you know how it goes

Thanks. You should start a new topic about it, so we don’t lose any good info about the pump among this current massive thread!

Changed all my water cooling parts last summer might refresh the suspension next but I'll see what my local garage chap thinks as l believe it had recent work done just a couple of years ago.

Made some progress on front end, it is tricky as I had to weld together three pieces of honeycomb as I could not get a piece wide enough (everyone online sells up to 120cm, would have required 135 :( ). I used small strips of plastic to hide the weld and "enforce" the lines from the radiator opening. I used the originalgrill tabs and fine tuned the adjustment to avoid the edge of the opening being wavy. Blanking of one side beyond the radiator opening has the glue drying right now; other side should go alright too and then I will start with the foglights blankings.

Hopefully this will finish as a 6 foot job, mabe 3 (as in you would think it is perfect from that distance). If I was to start over again I could land a foot job with the experience and a one piece grill (see what I did there? )

Fitted some spacers.
Did you do them front and back and what is the offset please.?
Where I live I have these stupid humps and considering to widen stance for comfort first, looks second, handling last (bit afraid of leaving roundabouts and loosing wheel, while on very gentle slide)

VANOS back on yesterday, fluids topped up, cooling airlock resolved.

However, on test drive there is a conspicuous flat spot at c. 3k revs and I have error code:
3C1F DME: Exhaust camshaft sensor: signal

It’s possible I haven’t plugged in the sensor properly, but any other suggestions before I get to it today?

Sensor and wiring would be first thing to check.
Yup, always start with things you've disturbed.
Be aware that even if it is plugged in, sometimes on old components simply disturbing them can cause them to fail.
Had it twice on ABS sensors after changing discs.

Thanks guys. Pleased to report that unplugging the cam position sensor, cleaning it up and plugging it firmly back together seems to have fixed the problem. I seem to have spilt oil on it when I took the VANOS off (NewTIS instructions suggest putting a container underneath to catch the oil - good luck with that :? ).
Oddly the sensors were reporting a static 12% angle on both the inlet and exhaust sides, even though there was no fault on the inlet side. Now they are both showing around 35% and zip up and down when I blip the throttle
Now for another test drive when I clear the drive of badly parked visitors.

Takes time but progress on the front end refresh is there. Today was a relief, the whole concept got proven out now that I have the blanking plates on the end of the grill and am pretty much done one fog light blank. So satisfying to have managed a long bend on the first try, that hot wire heater is proving amazing

Things will look even better on the car as the gaps and details will not be so visible with a dark background. The only bad point is that I need to source a large sheet of ABS (1600*400) to become the new link between bumper and undertray and be a front splitter while at it...

First rinsed off the heaps of green gunk to reveal the correct hue of green again

Then replaced the emblem that lost most of its colour during the aforementioned wash cycle  Fortunately I had an old one kicking about, so good enough for now

Bought a 2nd hand set of angel eye lights from umfaan, wiring and connectors heavily corroded.

Stripped it all away, re soldered and hard wired them in, connected up to the car further back, in the engine bay to avoid further corrosion.
