What have you done to your car today?

Got the MOT done on my E89 at BMW dealer Partridge of Hampshire - passed, with note to change brake pads/ disCs soon. Was most peed off to find front bumper scuffed down to the black plastic and red pain smears on the paint!!? I drew their attention to this and they looked at the video they take before they start work on the car and indeed acknowledged that the scuff was not there!! They assumed full responsibility (duh!) and on Monday will contact me to have the bumper resprayed.

The car has been ceramic coated - I guess I am within my rights to ask them to get the bumper ceramic coated too?

Not the best finish to the week 🙁

Cheers

Damn that’s poor form…

At least they’ve admitted liability. Whenever we install a ceramic coat on a customer car, we include a proof of installation and maintenance (creditcard format with dates and mileages). We do this for this exact reason, as it should also be covered in the event of an incident such as this.

I’d recommend you explicitly tell them in writing what coating has been installed, as well as provide them with the details of your detailer (provided you didn’t install it yourself of course). They broke it, they can fix it. Good luck!

Jesus, you wouldn’t expect that at a proper bmw dealer surely. Very very poor. Again, as Barty said, at least they were honest.

Yes, I guess I had them bang to rights. The video they took proved it wasn’t already there - so there’s not much else they can do I guess? Anyway let’s see if the story stays the same on Monday, if they don’t call me in the AM I’ll be on their case. I’ll be requesting a full re spray and not a touch up, and will supply them with the invoice showing the car was ceramic coated less than a year ago (it was done by a professional, not me). It’s not an almighty gash, it’s relatively small, but it’s there and it wasn’t when I took it - the car is a 2011 but the paintwork is pristine!

Ordered a full new front brake kit from freaky parts and ordered a caliper rebuild kit for the rear. Also booked in for a full service, visual check on the bushes. She also goes in tomorrow for a front end respray and filling of the many holes caused by the plate holder. Gonna be a tough month for the wallet… :|

Fitted new water pump and thermostat which has been surprisingly easy, filled with straight de-ionised water to do a test and flush, run a degas process, went for a short drive came back and realised she was pissing coolant.... Well, what I though was dead o-rings at the bottom of my expansion tank was actually a craked expansion tank so back to the start then... I'll drain, replace the tank and do the final refill with coolant next weekend.

Also removed the aluminium structure/shield to straighten it where the car had been jacked at the front and do a proper front jack modification inspired by [ref]Liam22[/ref]

I fitted some polyflex rear ARB bushes last week and realised how scabby the brackets were for them. So, ordered them and they appeared this morning from BMW Park Lane . So, for the second time in a week, fitted rear ARB bushes :D Also fitted A4 stainless bolts and large flanged stainless nyloc nuts.
Made me realise the winter list next year is re-powder coat the rear ARB. Luckily the surfaces under the bushes were all smooth painted and not rotten.

Fitted the Motor Werks V1 gear knob (thanks to @Rog1) and took her out for a spin. The gear shift is much nicer with the MW, and it feels bloomin lovely in the hand! Good mod!

What's the front jack modification?

Stainless bolts aren't usually suitable for suspension components.

The rear ARB clamp nut is a high-tensile Class 10 nut.

Stainless steel isn't strong enough for that application.

I can understand the theory and I have some Hi Tensile bolts buried somewhere, but being surprised that the lower bracket just slotted in a very thin piece of mild steel to support the bushes , i did think that the bolts should suffice. I suspect BMW would have over engineered certain parts also. Shame the bolts were so rotten. Surprised that high tensile bolts would get as rotten as mild steel ?

Not so much what have I done today but more of a what's being done over the next month.
Car went in to the the body shop on Monday. Little bubble on top of the driver's side front wheel arch and a small dent on passenger side front wing being fixed. New headlight and fog light being fitted on driver's side. Newish wheel liner, undertray and that triangular piece that sits in front of the liner all procured, after much searching, now being fitted. Machine polish of front end. Should have it back for Saturday. On the 9th March, she goes in to get the wheels refurbed and painted along with the calipers (still deciding on colours!!!!)
New seal kits, pistons, dust plates and Goodrich hoses for all four corners and full service....

Booked in for full Dinitrol on 26th March..

Found a fix for the leaks on the doors. During last storm (strong breeze) saw the water come in where the roof seals against the top seal that runs along the windscreen so that'll be fixed this weekend. Car's been gone three days and I'm lost without it lol.

Hi Tango. On mine, the water is coming in between where the seals on the top of the windscreen meet the seals on the hood, both sides. What I found is that, over time, the seals shrink ever so slightly leaving a tiny gap. The fix is to use a bicycle inner tube patch and glue that to one side so it fills the gap when the roof is up. Not sure if I'm allowed to link to another forum but here's what I found.... Hope this works for you.

When I get home from work where I welded up the driveshaft cv joint cover which was leaking grease,I shall be rebuilding the cv joint then putting driveshaft back on the car,I don’t believe you can buy the cover I welded so we’ll see how we go.
