What have you done to your car today?

Got phase one of my Alcantara project finished today and I’m pleased with the results.

Just need some screws for my new head unit and that can go in and the vents pushed back, hopefully they still fit - I know they’re tight in carbon leather.

Need to find a usb socket to replace the oem aux in with as well but there’s a cable behind ready :)

Looks great. How hard is it to do? I've done a vinyl wrap and didn't do too badly, but would love to have alacantara though.
Thanks! Not hard at all just really fiddly, you have to be careful not to put so much adhesive on the Alcantara that it soaks it up and obviously any spilt glue / adhesive will ruin the fabric. I used 3m foam fast 74 as the adhesive and loctite superglue to glue the edges on the back side once the adhesive on the face had dried. Time will tell how long it lasts, I thought it worth a shot as the adhesive could easily be removed and the trim wrapped if it doesn’t last. The knee pads will be my biggest challenge - not sure how I’ll do those yet

Got mine on axles, done an interim oil/filter change, new air filter and finally got round to fitting my ram air scoop - won’t get to test if it makes any difference for a while though

With so much time on our hands not driving the Zeds at least you can have a few goes. :P

Washed, waxed and fitted floating centre caps I’d got for Christmas and had forgotten about

Finally cleaned the Zed yesterday (and the Merc). I haven’t washed it since it had its ceramic coating but my goodness it makes a difference. Dried off using a Gtecniq towel and then a top up with the quick detailer. Looked very glossy and it’s the first time I’ve been able to see the orange fleck in the metallic paintwork. I think SanFran Red looks very flat but it finally showed its true colours yesterday.

I like your wheels ... what model are they?

Finally got RCH+ and going to install it this weekend. If weather going to be ok (forecast 19 degrees on Sunday :D ) maybe I'll do tinted windows.

Thanks. They are 800M style wheels. Standard on the M40i.

Fitted this pioneer head unit that I’ve had ready for ages. Had to butcher the back of the fascia plate to get it right around the radio. Not hugely impressed with the fascia plate to be honest so may well change it one day. That’s it for now, sorned and ready to sit for a while

Gave my MR its first wash in my ownership and then took it for its first proper dry drive. Its abilities have actually shocked me a bit, in comparison with my old 3.0i Roadster. I think I'm already addicted and am glad I chose to upgrade.

Today gave me a chance to assess some changes I've made. The rear tyres were rubbing on the arches in big bumps. I bought this car to enjoy on fun roads, so it has to be able to handle fast sweeping stuff with hidden bumps. It had spacers fitted to the front and rear wheels and, on the H&R lowering springs, the back end was sitting a little too low relative to the front. This appears to be standard issue with the H&R springs, and the remedy is to fit thicker rear spring pads. So I whipped off the spacers, ordered up some spring pads and slipped them in. Results below (bear in mind the original spring pad is 5 mm thick, thicker pad is only 9.5 mm thicker) :

The difference is minimal but noticeable to me, and is what I was hoping for. Although the car looked beefier with the wheel spacers, it has to be function over form for me in this area. Also fitted cruise control :)

Hi James,

Just a question about the wheel spacers. I had an issue today when fitting my coil overs that as I have aftermarket rims (previous owner) they were scraping on the coilers and as a result im going to need 10mm spacers so my car still functions. How big were the spacers on your car and did you remove them because they were ruining the arches? Just want to be able to have my car back to working condition but thats proving an issue at the moment!

Hi. My spacers were 20 mm at the rear and 15 mm at the front. Statically, they looked great, but the offset of the stock Z4M wheels combined with the spacers were giving issues. It sounds like the offset of your wheels might be a bit too big, so adding some spacers will hopefully resolve that for you.

Ahhh perfect, thank you very much. Ill order the 10mm ones and hopefully that'll solve my issue!

Postman just dropped this off today, now to ring round body shops to get some paint repaired around the car and have this colour matched :D

[ref]matthewpri[/ref] I don't think anyone typically has any rubbing issues with 10 mm spacers, but that is based on OEM BMW wheels. I hope the 10 mm items will push your wheels out far enough and fix the issue!

I had a prescription to pick up and needed to go to a supermarket before the weekend, so I took my Z4!

Did get a couple of funny looks from the queue outside Boots though.

I know that feeling, I still use my z4 everyday and the weather has been so lovely these past 7 days I drive everywhere with the top down.
