What have you done to your car today?

Finally got my wheels balanced after a suspension refresh and two alignments. Running sweeeet as a nut and feel in love with the car all over again. Lovely morning for a roof down blast.
However things then went downhill a little to say the least. Tried to help my dad get his bay vw camper going after it had sat unloved for two plus years. After some initial basic checks we towed it to bump start it. All went well, it fired up, I disconnected the tow rope, we turned around and I started to follow him the quarter of a mile back to his. His van never made it......

That’s tragic RIP such a shame :o

...Any tips on which parts sucked to do/tips? ...

There are a couple off youtube videos out there on the removal of the top from your car, I would recommend watching all of them
Definitely tape it off
Once the top has been separated from the car (many steps to get to this point) - you will need two people to lift it off, and a third person would be helpful to observe what and where things hang up while attempting to lift the top out.
Support the pump the entire time its out (and still attached), you don't want to damage any of the cables.
Lots of hardware to remove - be organized and keep carful inventory
I found cracks and broken tabs on the windshield frame cover - spendy, but ordered and replaced, couldn’t do 1/2 a job

Be patient

Good Luck

Ah you removed the actual top mechanism!

The procedure I was given just replaces the outer without removing the actual mechanical components (roof will stay bolted into the car).

I imagine that the liner can be done the same way with roof mech in situ. Will update this post with link when I get to my computer

I had to remove the entire assembly to replace the headliner (inside liner).
If you or anyone can replace the headliner without removing the entire assembly, you're a true magician!
I can assure you - it is not feasible - but I will let the others interject here.

Note taken regarding the headliner. I'm sure it will become abundantly obvious why it can't be done once I have the outer off!

Took my E89 to its first (to me) MOT today ... it failed! :(

Cracked rear offside alloy - ouch! The 19" alloy is going to cost £500+ to source and fit.

Interestingly it also failed on "Incorrectly spaced number plate" - I did not know that was an MOT thing?

Anyway - all will be sorted on Monday ...

ho hum! :-o

You could have the alloy professional welded/repaired. It's a lot cheaper than replacing it. You may want to think about moving away from runflats tyres too to avoid a reoccurance

I am looking at getting new (non RF) tyres in the next month - been saving up for them!

Not sure about the repair to the alloy - I will keep the "broken" one and offer it for sale to anyone who might want to do that.

Cheers

So, next Monday Costco will be having a discount on Goodyear Tyres which means that I can get a set of 4 Goodyears (225/35/19Y at front and 255/30/19Y at rear) for £513.36 with VAT and fitted/balanced etc. This is a full £200 cheaper than the equivalent Michelin PS4 - although I have heard great things about the Michelin's I don't think the Goodyears are bad either - so I think I will go for Goodyears next week.

I will have two new alloys now and hopefully by going for non-runflat tyres I will prolong their life! Plus I will have 4 RF tyres with good tread up for sale to try and recoup some of the cost!

Cheers

Took the day off work today for some leisurely gardening and car cleaning. I haven't cleaned my Zed since New Year as I've just not had the time with one thing or another. I've had to use it as my daily recently and been doing about 150 miles per week in all weathers. The car was filthy and rotten with road salt from the snow a couple of weeks back so I jacked it up one side at a time and snow-foamed all the underside and wheelarches and then jet-washed it all off. Then I went to town topside also, spending a leisurely 4 hours in the very pleasant afternoon sun getting it back in shape. Will have to order some new wheel centre caps as they've not fared well over the winter. Otherwise, she scrubs up very well for a 16 year old car. Gave it another coat of Soft99 Fusso Coat Dark to see it through the springtime

Well that looks very nice indeed, Sterling Grey & MV3'S too. You just need get rid of the hard top now & make the best of the current sunshine  .
I've just put a brand new set of Goodyear F1's on to my MV3'S. Tomorrow I hope to swap them out for my 103 daisies. Really looking forward to the much better stance of the car :D

Thanks Oldgitdave  The hardtop will be coming off soon to hang in the garage until the autumn. My car had 103 Daisies on when I bought it 4 years ago. Fitted the black MV3s almost straight away and love 'em still :D

Whenever I see photos of your car, it makes me cry. Not because it's terrible, but because it reminds me of how mine used to look before 7 years of daily driving took its toll on the bodywork

Yours looks fantastic for its age

They do look lovely, I'm well chuffed with mine which I bought just before Christmas on here. They've had a refurb in standard BMW silver so the look will be different to your beauty. I'll put up some pics when fitted  .

Thanks Ben G  The front bumper was resprayed last July but the rest of the paintwork is all original. Just liberal applications of elbow grease :D

I don't understand why this isn't done more 8) looks fantastic.

To my knowledge this is only the 3rd E86 to have elipsoids fitted , i remember seeing "tomtvr" fit a set to his phoenix yellow si coupe around 5 years ago & i was bowled over  it looked epic to me , i think they really suit but as ever with the 107s 202s they divide opinion  they are staying on :)
