Had a weeping vanos seal for a while so before the easter break ordered replacement o rings from x8r to cure the problem Wrong Before changing the o rings engine running sweet as a nut since changing the o rings running like a bag of spanners As I'm not a mechanic it sounds like the timing has gone to pot. What could I have broken by merely taking out the solenoids replacing the o rings and putting them back ?

Could it be the old Adige if it ain't broke don't fix it Any advice would be most welcome PS the o rings I took out were completely shot

Maybe the solonoids need purging of air if they’ve been removed from the engine? Have you been on a long run since?

Ah, ok, sorry no experience with that.
Given it was working before you started then as you say, it must be something you have done, or disturbed.
So I guess you start by re-doing everything you did, checking connections are on properly, no oil contamination on the connectors, etc.

thanks for that have taken the solenoids out and refitted engine sounds to be less rattily There doesn't appear to be any oil on the contacts but will buy electrical contact cleaning spray tomorrow and try that

It is possible that if they were leaking then they weren't adjusting properly. The ECU learns that and compensates for it. Called 'adaptation'.
I only have experience with the M54 engine, but that tends to run lumpy after you've changed the seals. It gets better fairly quick but can take 100 miles to completely sort itself out.
You can speed the process up if you have a scanner capable of resetting the adaptations to the default baseline.

Thanks for your help Don't know which bit worked but I took the solenoids out again ,dipped the end of the solenoids in clean oil ,refitted them cleaned the contacts in the plugs with contact cleaner started her up and after initial coughing is now back to running sweet as a nut :D

Well not sure exactly what the help was, other than telling you to do it all again, but hey it worked.
That's a relief for you.

Got this post late I'm afraid..
I had the same issue when changing my vanous seals .
It ran like I'd it had a handful of nuts and bolts ..
Took them out again and checked all the connections, again cleaned them again and replaced them again..
It ran as normal again...
I'm still till this day unsure why it ran like that.
Im sure it was all put back the way it came out..
Apart from being cleaned.
The 2.0 l engine seems to be a bit of a diva.

thanks for your reply sounds exactly the same as my problem must be the cleaning the n46 engine is allergic to Mine still running ok but have now got the reappearing engine warning light with no loss of power or rough running Its the dreaded P0420 code

PO420 .
The 20 .l curse
That actually isn't there..
It comes up on my car on occasion ..
Had the emissions checked and it passes MOT emissions test every year..
They do need an italian tune up every now and then..it seems to clear them out..
Never owned a car that needs to be given high revs to keep its ECU happy

thanks bluepain
Seems like its a 2 litre 4 pot thing But heho an Italian tune up every so often ain't such a bad thing Mines been ok since I reset the throttle settings and have been using proper petrol not the e10 weasle water
