What has gone wrong with your car during ownership?

Time period you've owned the car: 1 1/2 years

Mileage: 12000

Problems/Repair etc so far to date: Tempting fate but none (only service item costs)

Cost of mods: ££££

Cost of cleaning products: ££££££

Number of times my fiancée has told me I'm nuts spending so much time and money on "just a car": lost count

I keep telling myself it's all worth it.

2.0 had since new in 2005. First years via lease then bought as private. 73,000 annual now about 12,000
rear springs
wheel replaced at 12 months, probably road damage but blagged it through the lease company

on my own warranty ( the one advertised by Tif thingy, forgot the name)
air bag light
handbrake ratchet and cables
thats about it except for wear out parts

Cup holder? Seriously! Best take out some warranty if they are on there way out...

Most vital part on the car :P

BMW Assist: Hello, How can we help?
Owner: Hi, it's an emergency, I need someone round here quick! I'm halfway round the M25 and I've nowhere to store my hot drink!

I've never bothered with a warranty on a car, and the one I have now is only really because it's part of the AUC deal that BMW offer. As mentioned above with the engine mounts thread, you usually find what ever you are claiming is never covered!

Brought my M coupe a year ago this weekend from BMW.

Covered 27k in it, had lambda sensors and bonnet alarm sensors replaced .

I just took out another years fully comp warranty. As mentioned in an earlier post, if a major component (engine/gearbox) lets go on me I:

A) Can't afford the thousands of pounds it would take to replace (I've seen scary figures in excess of 15k for an engine replacement.....how much an indy would charge, or how much I could get a 2nd hand engine and fit it with the help of one of the guys in our workshop would be I don't know. But either way, I'd prefer to hand the keys over and drive around in a 1 series while BMW fix it for me....

B) Don't think the £873 it cost is that much for the peace of mind it gives. Given the obscene labour costs you could very quickly rack up that much in a years enthusiastic driving, and the couple of hundred extra of the driveline warranty didn't really make it worth thinking about.

If I only did a few thousand miles a year and the beemer was my toy I'd probably not have taken it out though.

MR. Had it three and a half years, 27,000 miles. Had a faulty nav screen and a faulty ABS sensor replaced under warranty three years ago. Nothing at all since.

Car: 2003 53 plate 3.0iSE roadster.

I have had it 3 years in Jan and covered 20k miles since ownership and it's been used as a daily driver.

only issues I have had are:-

1. Corroded 108 alloys. (didn't bother me as I was swapping them anyway)
2. The rear spring snapped. (again, upgraded to eibachs once my alloys were on so not really an issue.
3. alarm sensor under bonnet. (£8 part and takes 2 minutes to swap over)
4. cigarette lighter fuse. Again a 2 minute replacement.

This is my 8th car in approx 12 years and has been the most reliable by far. And I would definitely buy another !

Time period you've owned the car - 1 year this Wednesday
Mileage - 28k, last 10k by me
Problems/Repair etc so far to date

1. Two rear springs replaced
2. Lambda sensor replaced
3. Coil pack and spark plug on cylinder 5 replaced
4. New rear subwoofer replaced on passenger side rear
5. Some minor trim parts that were done for when I bought it.

So, for me I reckon about £1500 of work in the last year. I've just extended it with £0 excess because all of these items were done on individual trips to the dealer and none were particularly expensive, so having a £100 excess would have meant I'd have paid at least £400 last year and I wouldn't have bothered with the trim bits. I also figured that it would be easier to sell with a warranty to still in place, plus I have no intention of modifying it in anyway. However, if I keep it beyond next year, I'll relegate it to be my 2nd car and then I doubt I'll extend. While it's my daily (and only) driver it's warranty all the way.

£1500!!!

For 2 rear springs, a lambda sensor, coilpack, sparkplug and sub? Labour must be horrific as those aren't expensive parts.

i've had my car two and a half years.the car has needed 2 rear springs and a lambda sensor.

Have owned my 2003 since 09/2007. Have put 17K on it myself (car presently has 53K)

Passenger door won't unlock electrically anymore (lock motor)
One headlight bulb needed replacement.

That's it! Nothing else in 3 years of ownership (summer driver only) :)

Labout is £120 per hour IIRC, but to be fair £1500 is an educated guess. I always ask for the warranty paperwork, as much for maintaining a good file of history, but the dealer always obscures the prices and then photocopies it to make sure you can't read through the Tipp-Ex.

However a quick glance before they did this the other day shows that the sub replacement, at internal labour and parts rates remember, was £151 to BMW Warranty. So, I have no idea, but I'd guess that's going to be near £250 for the retail rate.

Anyway, for me the convenience of having a warranty far outweighs the cost of renewing it, and so that's why this year I put my money down. These cars aren't cheap to run in any sense, so I figure I might as well make it as easy as possible.

It's been noted before when we added up engine failures but M coupes seem to suffer more issues than M roadsters.

Wonder why, but indeed all the engine mounting failings I have seen were on coupes as well.

I've had my 2007 MR since December last year. In that time I've had the following work done:

Steering wheel trim replaced
Headlamp washer replaced
New battery
Faulty bonnet catch alarm

I think each was a seperate visit in the space of about 3 months before the warranty expired in June of this year. I've not extended and its not been in since (touch wood)

If I recall 'Megafactories' the Z4MC was built by cleaners, gardeners and local homeless persons using left over parts from building 'proper' Z4MRs and X5s hence their appalling reliability record.

Or did I dream that bit?

This thread from M3 torque is worth a read in relation to this subject. I know it refers to a 04 M3 but it's the same engine and helps me justify the warranty cost to myself.

As a first owner I think you have a much better chance of good will from BMW. From that post it is not clear what the purchase history is though.

Also depends on your relation with the dealer of course.
