What else would you get?

First off . I'm a pig. I have both, an M Roadster and a 911. Secondly, if you are looking at a Porker, it should be an S, my 2009 Carrera S (997.2) has 385 hp (400 with the sport Chrono), a big difference from the 333hp in my M. The ride is more precise than anything else I've driven and it is more comfy.
You will miss the "feel" of the Zed, the exhaust note, ..... and seats in the M are better than those in the 911. As mentioned above, the ride is much nicer in the 911, especially in granny mode (without the sport or sport+ turned on).
I love them both

As happy as I am bumbling about in my 69bhp Fiat

The only car at the moment to tempt me away from my Zed or in addition to it would be an early V8 manual Vantage

Something like this

Only thing I'd really consider to replace my Z4mR would be a Lotus Elise, similar to this:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201801162799342?postcode=gl115db&model=ELISE&year-from=2002&sort=price-asc&make=LOTUS&radius=1500&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&advertising-location=at_cars&page=1

I would love an Elise / Exige but they are useless for practicality. I fancy one as a track day car at some point but I couldn't see me and the missus having a weekend away in one.

The luggage space is a bit limited

If only I could fit in one. There would be no MR in the garage.

I still love my MR though. :D :driving:

Better than I thought. Could get a bike in there... :tumbleweed:

Don’t be deceived, half of the space you can see is for the engine! The luggage goes in a small opening to the rear of the engine compartment :o

It's ok Rob. My mate had one and is was amazing how useless the boot space was. Can't even get a holdall in there.

Ive sometimes had a similar thought but it's hard to top the ZMR in terms of bang for buck if you want a convertable for sensible money which wont lose too much money -my X100 XKR came closest and was easy on the eye . SWMBO preferred the Jag and i got got nice waves from other folk which i never get in the BMW .
Id maybe look at a X150 XKR now that prices are entering sensible territory .

What about the new Renault Alpine?
http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/alpine/92552/new-alpine-a110-price-2018-release-date-video-and-full-details

Or for 20k less a low mileage 996 C4S?

Watching this one quite closely. It's usurped the Alfa 4C as my attainable car of choice at present...

Have you considered staying in the BMW Family, and checking out used M6 coupes ? I traded my 2007 Z4 roadster for a 2006 M6 coupe with 5.0 L V-10 and SMG 7 speed transmission, which I employ as a manual via use of the paddles at all times. Much faster than the 3.2 Boxster S which preceded the Z4, and presumably a close match to the newer 911's. A friend says that I have no need for seatbelts, as I am constantly pushed back into the seat !

Aston Martin Vantage, off to look at one tomorrow :)

That would be what I would look at too! Not likely to happen for me as I'm looking to retire soon and need to channel, funds into non-automotive areas! :(

I think the age of and mileage of the car you are looking at jhst makes it too expensive and not worth the extra money.
I would go for an earlier car, 06 or 07, it’s would be a Carrera S and would cost about 28 grand. I think that’s the sweet spot.

Does that mean you bought it? If so.. welcome to the club :D

In answer to the OP, something like a cayman or 997 911 would certainly be on my list as 'upgrades', but its always budget dependent. set a budget then go looking. I saw a really nice 997.2 GTS in my local OPC for around 60k, that's a great car.

Also don't forget Z4M is in the 'cash/loan' price bracket (and thus attract owners with that mindset), things above it tend to escape that - thus are priced with financing in mind and consequently tend to get treated as similar purchases despite the 'sticker price' being quite different. There's also what the z4m is on paper, vs what it ACTUALLY is to drive, it's great - but a modern porsche will be much sharper and faster despite having similar 'paper' numbers.

Yep, picking it up on Saturday, can't wait :)

V8 Vantage N420

Great car, i drove the V8 Vantage S around millbrook alongside my v12 and it's an incredibly capable thing - it actually really surprised me. Another example of a car that on paper isn't THAT impressive (people will assume it's no better than an E92 M3, they're wrong), but handling/steering/comfort/noise/speed are far above what you'd expect based on the headline '420bhp' figure and you quickly realise why it commands the price tag.
