What does this release catch do?

Can someone please tell me what the top release catch does ? Pushing it does not seem to do anything!20200128_162227-01.jpeg
 
No idea, and will be interested to learn the answer. May be pops up a couple of stinger missiles from the head rests. :wink:

I think the lower catch of the two does that job Fred, the uppermost one does nothing on post 06 cars but secured the soft top in its stowed position in pre facelift cars :thumbsup:

The lower catch opens the centre cubby hole with 6 CD changer. The car is a an Alpina 04 plate with no through ski hatch. Unfortunately I do not have an owners manual for the car.

The lower catch opens the centre cubby hole with 6 CD changer. The car is a an Alpina 04 plate with no through ski hatch. Unfortunately I do not have an owners manual for the car.

I think the ski hatch & the cd changer both open with the bottom catch, the door flap is the same for both varieties and it’s just the “contents” of the cubby hole which differ.
If you look on the reverse side to the upper catch it still has the roof catch visible, bmw just chose not to utilise it as it was a bit nadgery in operation :?
