What does the MAF actually do?

Hello again everyone, I have a 2008 z4 e85 2.5i. Could someone tell me what exactly the MAF sensor (5wk97502) does, i.e. What/ how does it read and then what it controls/ adjusts when driving. Basically I'm at my whits end with my Z, I keep getting lumpy acceleration and knock sensors 1&2 showing in the fault code. Now a bit of history since I bought it early this year......it has had; new valvetronic motor, new eccentric shaft sensor, new vanos solenoids, fresh oil, filters, new knock sensors, new throttle body and most recently new disa valve. My thoughts are that something is wrong with the air/ fuel mix when it accelerates lumpy, now it only does this when the knock sensor codes come in. If I reset the codes and clear adaptions it runs fantastic, smooth powerful acceleration, this used to last for up to a week then the knock sensor codes would reappear and it would go lumpy again, this has now deteriorated to probably less than a day of clearing the code for the lumpy acceleration to occur again. Last week it seemed to stop being lumpy but felt all round generally sluggish, mpg reduced slightly too, upon investigation I found the DISA had failed (flap loose obviously broken) it seemed to be stuck approx 45 degrees open, I had only got No1 knock sensor code fault active, not No2. So at this point I thought I had finally found the root cause, so fitted a new DISA expecting all to be well. However I'm back to lumpy acceleration within a day of resetting the 1 & 2 knock sensor codes, really pee' d off with it now and wishing I'd never bought the ruddy thing πŸ‘ΏπŸ˜Ÿ Now today I cleared the codes and adaptions again, unplugged the MAF sensor plug on the ducting from the air filter box, started up fine albeit with the orange engine light now illuminated, went for a good drive around, low speed, stop start, hard and soft acceleration and it drove great, very surprised, maybe a little smokey which I guess is over fuelling? I then checked for codes and the knock sensor codes were not there, just the ones for the fact the MAF was unplugged (2 codes one was inlet temp and other the MAF). So this is why I'm curious as to what the MAF sensor controls, I'm wondering if this is starving the fuel or overfueling which causes the Knock, then the knock sensors see this and alter the timing which creates the lumpy acceleration??? What are your thoughts? Oh I should mention mine is the 2.5i N52 E85 which only has one DISA valve 2008 model
 
As far as I know the MAF measures the mass of air entering the engine and adjusts the amount of fuel accordingly...
 
i ran my car for about 6 months with the MAF unplugged, because with it plugged in it would go into limp mode under hard acceleration (not ideal for a track car)

while running with the maf unplugged it had no problems at all. I'd try running the car with the MAF unplugged, if it makes the car considerably happier then I'd swap out the maf. you can try cleaning it with some electrical contact spray, but I just bought a cheap maf, seems to work and no longer cuts out.

Also just tried unplugging it with the engine running and it stayed running, slight change in tone but stayed running. There's a YouTube video for testing if your MAF is working that basically says your engine should stop if you unplug a working MAF sensor whilst engine is running. I've now ordered a new sensor πŸ’°πŸ’°πŸ’° any more advice would be greatly appreciated, and if anyone wants to risk unplugging their MAF whilst engine running and let me know if your engine stops 😎
 
Thanks brillomaster & Truman. Just want to get this sorted then I can actually start to enjoy driving it, nothing worse than a kangaroo acceleration
 
Great, fit the new sensor and see how you get on. Youll likely need to do a hard reset of the ecu after fitting, ie disconnect the battery for at least 15 minutes.
 
Didn't know about the hard reset thing. I have a code reader that clears codes and can clear adaptions but will also try the hard reset now, thanks
 
I’ve had about 4 MAF sensors in 160,000 miles on the M.

If the car is running fine and I disconnect the MAF, I get a lumpy idle and hesitant throttle.

If it’s broken, then I get the same rough idle and hesitant throttle whether connected or disconnected.
 
Ok people, just got back from a nice holiday in Croatia, during which my new MAF sensor arrived. I have now fitted it, erased the two knock sensor fault codes that were Present again and cleared adaptions using my reader. I then went for a drive, and yes there is a noticeable difference, much more power and smooth acceleration 😎 I also noticed when coming to a stop the revs don't immediately drop right down, seems the throttle is a lot more sensitive and responsive, and best of all the knock sensor faults have not come back. I'm going to give it a good week and check for codes again but not wanting to tempt fate I think it has sorted it fingers crossed. πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜ŽπŸ˜ŽπŸ˜ŽπŸ˜ŽπŸ˜ŽπŸ˜€

Well, garage seems to think vanos is sticking??? Suggesting running with engine oil flush over the weekend to hopefully clear out any gunk, along with fuel treatment. Then oil change and new filter. To be fair I haven’t had chance to talk to the mechanic in detail yet but I’m not overly convinced at this diagnosis, whatever the issue is it causes both 1&2 knock sensors to come up as fault which in turn buggers up my timing which gives the lumpy acceleration.anyway going to thrash the arse off it over the weekend and see what develops.
 
Thanks, the fact they didn’t try to charge me speaks volumes . Really wondering if they added engine flushe nowπŸ™
