What Do You Think Of This Advert?

Hi

I am looking to test drive the below car tomorrow; what do you all think? Does it look good value for money?

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201051375909676/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/12000/maximum-mileage/up_to_80000_miles/engine-size-cars/2l_to_2-5l/model/z4/make/bmw/postcode/ba147tn/page/2/radius/40?logcode=p

Thanks

Pete

This is the alternative, any better?

Cheers for the assistance, I'm not got a great eye for spotting a bargain vs a duff!

Nice colour and good to have the aero kit fitted.
Missing the goodies like Sat Nav, heated seats, xenon( I think), sports seats, etc.
Not the best of wheels

IMHO about £1,000 - £1500 over priced for age and mileage

pretty much identical to mine. bog standard no toys except the body kit. if i was searching again i'd definitely hold out of sports seats.

CJ's right as ever, a touch over priced looking at what they are going for at the mo. although a bit of a dealer premium. 8 - 8.5K would be nice for it from a dealer.

2nd one is not much better - low on spec, less desirable 2.2 engine (out of 2,2, 2.5 and 3.0.

No sport seats, xenon, heated seats, sat nav, sport button, etc.

Go test them but I think you can do better

Thanks for the feedback guys, I will take your advice and hold off on the test drives until something better comes along!

Out of interest, why was the 2.2l less desirable? And can you replace standard headlights with Xenons?

Cheers

Nargh - go and test drive them as you'll get used to what they feel like and better spot a good one and what you like

2.2 was the lowest powered of the sixes and dropped early in the life. Most buyers go for 2.5 or 3.0 of that vintage. They also tend to be lower specced both as standard and customer options

Retrofit of xenons is extremely expensive due to light, programming, level sensors, etc. Best find one with it lights matter

Start to make a list of what accessories (if any) you want and start punching car detaisl into What car or Parkers to see what values come up.

Thanks for your help CJ. I have been steadily compiling a list since joining this site; this is the latest:

Must Have
BMW Z4 2.5si (was originally looking at 2.2 or 2.5)
M Sport Suspension/Seats/Steering Wheel
2006 or later (although have been looking at earlier models due to price)
Wind Deflector
Fog Lights
Fully Automated Soft Top
ABS
Metallic Paint
Remote Central Locking
Alarm
Speaker System
Mileage < 60,000

Like to Have
Traction Control
Electric & Heated Door Mirrors
Trip Computer
Xenon Headlights
Ipod Dock
18" Alloys
Cruise Control
Heated Seats
Heated Front Windscreen

Is there anything obvious I've missed that you would recommend?

Thanks again for your help and I'll look at the website you suggested

Pete

Looks like you copied the spec from somewhere as there is some standard stuff there and some easy / cheap(ish) retro fits - so not so important.

BMW Z4 2.5si (was originally looking at 2.2 or 2.5) - what about the 3l?
M Sport Suspension/Seats/Steering Wheel - seats good to get wheel not expensive retro
2006 or later (although have been looking at earlier models due to price)
Wind Deflector - retro
Fog Lights - think these are std
Fully Automated Soft Top - std
ABS -std
Metallic Paint
Remote Central Locking-std
Alarm -std
Speaker System - basic one has a number of speakers there is an upgraded one
Mileage < 60,000

Like to Have
Traction Control - std
Electric & Heated Door Mirrors-std
Trip Computer-std
Xenon Headlights
Ipod Dock - retro fit
18" Alloys
Cruise Control - retro
Heated Seats
Heated Front Windscreen

Really, you are looking at milage, engine, colour, seats. plus wheels and xenons if youre botherd

As the guys have already said, it's key to find the engine that's right for you. Get a colour you like, and the extras that will make it feel that much more special.

There's plenty out there. so take the time to look around.

I can highly recommend getting the M-sport seats, especially heated ones. They really make an interior. the M-Sport wheel is also a nice to have. I don't, but really want to retro fit one soon.

And as with any car, get a good set of alloys. they make a car.
I don't know what your tastes are, but i truly believe they must be 18''s for this car.

i have the 108's. but beware of the corrosion issue. over the past 18 months, my rears have gone from looking spotless, to requiring a full refurb.

As for engines, and as you can see from my footer i plumped for the 2.2. Mainly because i was coming from a Golf GTI, and do a lot of town/city driving, and it's my daily driver.

and having test driven it, knew it was more than a match for me.

i must admit - that i sometimes wish it was a 3 litre. For the times when i'm feeling really adventurous, and the 2.2 does need to be revved to be properly rewarding. but when you do, it is absolutely fantastic. And when you don't it's fine and very reserved.

if my zed was my weekend car i would get a 3 litre or an M.

definately get xenons.

here's mine as it stands:

Thanks Normski - thats a great example of a Zed you've got there, and if I can get my hands on anything of similar quality I'll be very happy indeed! I am coming from a modest Clio so I agree with you in that a 2.2l should be more than enough for me coming from a 1999 1.4l.

I've revised the wish list somewhat based on your advice, thanks for all your help, it's much appreciated to get tips from the owners themselves!

Pete

X2 on 2.2- better get a well specced 2.2 over a bad spec 3.0. On z runs I've never been lacking against the 3.0s!
M seats and xenons a must!

I'm glad you have developed a spec sheet but as said above it looks copied (or misinformed). 50% of what's listed is standard.

Other items are model dependent such as ///M sport suspension is standard on the 3.0i but an option on smaller engine derivatives.
You've referenced 2 prefacelift models but your target is a post 2006 (facelift) and Si which is the later post facelift engine.

I'd start like this:
Basic engine size, colour interior colour and gearbox
Must have options that are hard to retofit (cost or rarity) - such /M sport seats, seat heating, Sat Nav and xenons. Most of the rest are easy retrofit.
Budget - now balance spec against budget. A 2004 3.0i fully specced will cost less than a 2007 stripped out 2.0i and frankly condition is all that matters one a car is 3 or more years old.

Just a few more thoughts.

Thanks CJ

Yes you are right in that I took a few of the spec details from here, so didn't realise they were standard at the time - I've since remove these (do you know whether fog lights are standard?)

I originally punted for the 2006 or later because a few people on here said that the engine was better on the post 2006 models and they had 6 gears on the 2.5 models where as the pre 2006 models had 5 gears (barring the 3.0l). I would like an ipod dock as standard which I think they fitted on post 2006 models but this is less of an issue as it can be retro fitted. Please correct me if I have misunderstood this?

I'm also still a little confused about the SE version; am I right in saying this is special editon, so generally comes with a few more of the extras?

Thanks again

Pete

Hi Guys

Found another car this morning which looks to match my spec a little closer; thoughts?

Pre facelift only SE existed although BMW dropped or added the SE designation (can't remember which way round) at some point although the spec did not change.

Post facelift there is SE or Sport, the sport is the more desirable option and will always command more money being higher in spec than the SE models.

Sports have M Sport steering wheels (Thicker), M sport Seats, M Sport Susepnsion , 18" Wheels MV2's (Std)
