What do you do with your old tech?

So we have a load of old tech and junk lying around..

Ranging from:
Old PCs (15-7 years old)
Old laptops (15 - 7 years old)
Old DVD players (over 10 years old)

Loads of old components RAM, HDDs, FDDs, CDROMs, Graphics cards, sounds cars, NICs, mice, keyboards, etc etc

(Yes we hoard all our old junk).

What do you do with yours? Send it to the dump? Charity Shop? Sell on ebay (not really viable)?

Funnily enough I'm having a declutter now. There are a couple of things I'll try and sell, some stuff I'll offer for free and some that will be scrapped at the tip.

I have loads of stuff like that stuffed in my workshop!! Why? I ask myself, it's no good to man or beast.

If it's too old to be any use to anyone I make sure I don't just wipe the hard drive, I take it out and physically destroy it after wiping it. The take the rest to the electronic recycling bit at our local tip.

Stuff that's a couple of years old, recycled through friends & family. Keep a few bits as spares (I usually end up fixing F&F machines). Anything 5+ years old gets sent through recycling at the local tip.

:D yep, great fun with a sledgehammer. Also do it with old copier/printer's hard drives (where one exists)

Spent Saturday to Thursday of last week emptying our loft and 2 rooms of junk, some of it IT related. Made 10 trips to the dump and 2 trips to charity shop. Given some stuff away and still got a box of things that I havent decided about yet.

Threw a top of the range Pioneer DVD player and a top of the range Sony stacking system away even though they worked ok. Both well over 12 years old. Heartbreaking, but sometimes you gotta be ruthless.

Hard drives definately need destroying, formatting is not enough. We get rid of HDD's at work via a company that shreds them...literally! So I will put the 7 or 8 drives I found in the pile at work!

It is heartbreaking to remember how much things cost when new and now they aren't worth dick!

my daughter works a place that collects and recycles old pcs and mobiles from firms - dunno if 10 yr old stuff has any value to anyone - i know they pay a small fee for 3-5 yr old stuff - and collect for free - there must be some quantity or intrinsic value that makes it worthwhile

i will check if anyone is interested

I have an old Sony stack in the barn which I use when working on the tractor etc. but I guess it does not like the temperature changes much so I guess I need another free set to replace it :)

This is my old tech. A Pioneer SX980. It dates from 1978-79. I just plug it in.
