Morning all,

These have come on twice in the last few weeks.
If I come to a stop and turn the car off, when restarting then appear to clear.

If both on together it means their is a fault with the abs/traction control systems and neither is working. ..

I had the same issue on my old Z those lights kept coming on.... Was actually the battery was getting old, swapped it for a new one and electoral gremlins dissapeared

I tend to think it's one of the DSC pressure sensors on the way out, there are two of them and they have to agree within a certain range or the system generates a fault code. Mine first started to error when the sensor got hot (due to heat from engine), initially it would reset with a restart, then it would only disappear after I allowed time for the engine bay to cool down...

Read the fault codes - you should see 5E20 (sensor 1) or 5E21 (sensor 2) along with 5E24 (as a consequence of the mismatch error)

Easy to replace a sensor - look at this thread as all the info is there

I had them two lights also it turned out to be abs unit fault .
I did read that after 40 turns of the key the unit
Resets itself and the lights go back out .
My car registered that fault 26 times in the last
7000 miles that's why the dealer paid for the repair as I have a printout of its history .

Been having the same the lights coming on every now and again and the code once read was pressure sensor 1

Is the pressure sensor what is discussed above?
Yes, but to confirm it you should get the fault codes read...

I have the same problem on my E85, took it in to my Indie, Autotech Performance, near Telford who reset the fault codes which temporarily cleared the problem but the lights came back on after a short drive. It's now booked in to get both sensors replaced on Monday (£95 + VAT each) - Pete says that it will only take about 15 minutes to swop them and then a brake bleed to get rid of any air in the brake lines.

These sensors are very common on the z4. the abs unit can also fail (as other have said) but in most cases is just one of the sensors on the way out. You dont normally need to bleed if you literally unscrew one and have the other one ready to screw straight in. I literally did this and did loose a drop of brake fluid. Its one of the easiest repairs you can do on the car mechanically wise.

As anyone done a how too for this.
Only yesterday I was at a fellow zeders reading his codes.it did not show any even though the 2 lights were lit, after turning steering to full lock a few times both ways and restarting the lights stayed off.

Car booked in to Grants specialists on Wellington.
£92+VAT.
Got the codes read to say it was sensors.

Will get an oil service done at the same time

Autotech Performance, near Telford, fitted 2 new sensors this morning @ £90.99 + VAT each (£218.38) plus some labour £22.75 + VAT (£27.30) and all now back to working normally.

WOW you really got ripped off here not only did they not do a diagnostic the first time to even know the problem ie, abs sensor or pump fault etc. They just reset the problem light that's the oldest trick in the book knowing full well it will come back on. The ECU stores everything so this fault would have been logged on all the days it has appeared. If they had done a diagnostic check (basic mechanics) its really 1st thing a decent garage would do if not ripping you off knowing you will have to come back for further work. The job is something you could do yourself for free with a £30 c110 scanner off ebay or similar diagnostic machine. I'd heard of this place in Telford as I'm up the road but after seeing this post I'd never go there. Obviously people need to make a living but you have just paid alot of money for a what is a £20 sensor. I'd be curious to know what their labour rates are as I work for Volvo in Walsall we are a proper dealer and charge £65 per hour. The sensor is just a matter of taking your wheel off and unplugging the sensor my 6 year old daughter could do it if I showed her which size socket fits the bolt to undo it...........

all sorted I suppose now but you'll know for next time I just cant believe alarm bells wouldn't be ringing at £100 each sensor that's a huge profit for a 15 min job

I actually have a spare abs sensor too on ebay for sale for £11. You was well and truly robbed for a diy job you should be doing yourself really. It's about as hard a job as topping up your oil up I'm sure theres even plenty of video to show you on youtube......

My last E46 330ci had this fault a new abs pump was like £1500 from bmw and they was trying to tell me old units can't be coded to car. So being in the trade I ignored as you do went straight to my scrapyard and got one for £50. I fitted it and coded vin number to match it and guess what no more fault lights. My friend then got the same fault few years later he unplugged his battery first this way we found out no coding was needed. The changed the pump swapped this way the car thinks its still using the old pump info coding. Bleed brakes and reattach battery after 20 mins that resets the ECU job done

That's because you ain't using correct software you have cheap stuff which just clear faults. If you have lights on the dash there will always be fault codes stored as the dash lighting up is actually last port of call to the driver. The ECU stores faults way before they appear on your dash.

If you have a bmw you should really know about inpa if not well that's why people pay lots at garages or cant read faults using cheap software. Inpa is bmw software and does everything a bmw dealer would be able to do. comes with one touch download or you can download the inpa torrents for free if good with computers

Inpa

these C110 scanners are a lot easier to use but no where as in depth for things you can do a inpa but still good

If you paid attention, you'd realise that I was refering DSC warning lights and DSC pressure sensors and not ABS sensors!

The diagnostics / checks were done last week as it happens and I was shown the full results and had a long discussion as to the faults and the way ahead!

The sensors that were replaced were the DSC pressure sensors on the individual front & rear brake circuits under the brake master cylinder and from Sopers they cost £109.19 each.

In future, please don't start waffling about being ripped off etc before understanding what is being referred to and the actual work / parts that was done. :poke:

I though that discussion of pirating copyright software was forbidden on the forum?

Or will we next have a thread saying that the easiest way to get a Z4 is to go and steal one?
