What damage have I done?

Hit a big pot hole on the drivers side going about 40. Heard a big bang, now these lights have come on. Handbrake, traction control, abs and tyre pressure. Also hear a sound while turning the wheel at low speeds. Had a look at the otherside (passengers) to compare and looks like there's damage at the base of the coil spring. I don't know a lot about cars. Anyone know what damage I've done? Took the photo of the dash while mum was driving.

Hard to tell exactly. I think you'd need to jack it up and wheel off to be sure. The end of the spring never does quite reach that kink on the lower seat, but something has caused the rubber to wrinkle up.
If you take the handbrake off, does the warning light stay on, but yellow?
Pretty sure that's an abs sensor failed, and chances are it'll be the front right one, but a code reader will confirm it.
It is possible that the end of the spring has snapped off and has either lodged lower down, or damaged the abs sensor wire on it's way by.
Definitely get it checked out pronto, as your flexi brake line is in the same place!

I'm trying to remember how close [ref]Zedebee[/ref] is to you as he may be able to code read it and has enough knowledge to spot the problem.

PS. Glad to see your Mum's inate mechanical sympathy kept it down to a modest 80mph with all those lights on!!!

You let your Mum drive at 80mph when you might have just trashed the front suspension?

Those 4 lights are usually just a wheel speed sensor, but best to get a code reader on it to know for sure. I don’t think you’ve broken a spring, hard to tell from the photos.

Those coils are not well fitted though and the struts are definitely overdue a refresh.

Does the car otherwise drive OK?
Can you post a video of the sound the steering makes at low speed?

Also worth taking the wheel off too (or inspecting the inside face) to make sure it’s not cracked. or buckled.

Haha [ref]enuff_zed[/ref], our posts crossed. I’m about 40mins from Reading. Happy to take a look, feeling a bit lost without a Z4 at the moment

If you head towards Reading you should find a zed in a ditch with a chap berating his mother.

I'll get the wheel off when I get back if I can and take more photos. Just driving 4 hours and 30 minutes from Ilfracombe to Northampton, happened on the North Devon link road. Have about 1h 40mins left. Been driving (post pot hole) for about 2 hours seems to be driving fine. Ill check the handbrake light when I stop too and get back to you then. Thank you

Ps I know she's a maniac, it was on the M5 though, I let her drive the boring bits.

Thank you for the reply, yeah I know she's a maniac. In fairness it is on the m5 and ahe was overtaking. On our way back to Northampton now. I've just changed my location, I no longer live in Reading, I haven't been on this sight since 2021, when I sold my 2.5si, I just found this beauty by chance for 1800 pounds, 2004, black, cream leather seats, mot until December and only 54k miles, the guy had garage it for the last 3 years, only driven 300 miles in that time and I get it, drive it 500 miles in 2 weeks and destroy the suspension. Driven 2 hours like it. Seems to be OK, I'll take the wheel off once I stop and get back to you then.

OK.
No heavy braking, and take it easy on bends, roundabouts etc as you have no functioning stability system with those lights on.

Might sound crazy but I hit a pothole and my airbag light came on. I disconnected the battery for about 20 minutes cleared codes with my scanner and all fine. Might be worth a try

OK I've parked up, don't have a socket big enough for the bolts atm, so can't take the wheel off. When the steering wheel is straight the wheels aren't. I've also done some more photos and handbrake light goes yellow when you take it off and red when on. Steering moans at low speeds

Look at the bottom coil of the spring on the pothole side! Buggered!
You may well be lucky and the lights will reset.
However, you need a new spring on the drivers side. Judging by the state of the rest of the front end suspension, once that strut is dismantled you will find the damper is shot. And you wouldn't want to change just one side.
My minimum forecast is new dampers, top mounts, bump stops, knuckle bolts and springs both sides. Possibly a new ABS sensor, but that's cheap in comparison with the rest!
Not much change from £500 if you can do all the work yourself.
Oh and if the rear looks like the front does...............................

You don't know much about self-preservation either, if you (or your mum) continued to drive at 80mph with the 'christmas tree' of warning lights on, after a 'big bang'.

Yeah I figured as much, thank you so much for the reply, I'll have to try and get it booked into garage. As unfortunately I don't have the knowhow to do it on my own. My mechanical skill ends at servicing and changing wheels, plus I don't have half the tools needed.

Oh heck! Double it then. Unless you have someone akin to me or Bigwinn close by you?

Unfortunate. Hopefully you can get it fixed soon and get back out there

I had my front shocks changed last year for £500 by a garage, they were original shocks that had done 20 years and 100.000 miles, they were completely trashed but they weren't anywhere near as rusted out as yours, the one top strut mount was nearly perforated completely tho,

So as others have said expect to pay close to a grand for all that work the shocks alone will cost a £100 each
