What Daily?

Hola!

In a bizarre act of "you agree?", SWMBO has accepted that the Z4MR is an "appreciating asset". This means I "need" a daily.

Budget will be around 23K

As I'll be driving it as a daily, I want something that is entertaining and has reasonable poke but practical enough to do other stuff and be a winter hack. My daily commute is 200 miles a week.

So far it's down to these:

Golf R 5 Door - Quite like the idea of 4WD as it makes winter painless (plus I like the idea of driving to a ski resort)
BMW M135i - Much nicer spec than the Golf R (most have leather heated seats etc)
Golf GTI - Can get a newer one for the budget but might prove a bit dull (especially next to the 440i)

Any other ideas?

Cheers T1b

I might take one for a test drive and see how I get on with it. I did like the 118i I had as a loan when I had it and the M135i sounds like a bit of a bargain.

Audi RS3
A45 AMG

Or for something left field...Hyundai i30-N (the one that’s been pounding the Nurburgring)

Both good shouts,

Didn't think the AMG A45 had fallen into budget but they have (pretty leggy compared to the Golf R at same price mark, 15k v >30k)

RS3 seems "worse" at that price point , way older (2012, around the 30k mile mark)

I think I'd lean towards something newer, say an S3 but it feels like paying more for a Golf R with a prettier badge (Which it kind of is as they are on the MQB platform at my price point).

Think the oldest I'll go is 2015

Can't argue with the performance of either of those choices Cheers!

If you fancy saving your self a load of money. Take a Mazda3 MPS out for a test drive. Such a shame they stopped them.

What about something like a 330e? I test drove one for 3 days and loved it! The electric motor only gets 50 miles per charge IIRC, but there’s a little 2 litre petrol engine also to keep you going.

I was really surprised by how quick it was off the line. Having said that, though, it’s probably not a very exciting daily if that’s what you’re after.

I’ve read more than a few stories of people being burgled for Golf Rs and it doesn’t half put me off owning something fast VAG.

Having said that, it’s a very good all-rounder for what you need.

Definitely M135/40. I have one as a daily hack. Perfect for winter with winter tyres. You don’t need 4wd. More torque and power than the Golf and available in manual. What’s not to like?

£23k equals Z4MC. Problem solved.

If you are thinking of VAG you ought to be able to get a really good Leon Cupra R in budget. From some of the stories I've read I'm not sure how long you'd keep a Golf R or S3. :(

Personally I'd be after an M135i. :worshipbmw:

S5 is it bit close to the 440I (Other car), didn't think a 330e would be within budget?

Going to test drive a Golf R and a M135i over the next few weeks.

Good shouts though! Cheers!

Of those mentioned already, my choice would be the M135i

Given it's mainly German cars that have been discussed, I'm not sure you'd consider this one. But...

What about a Focus RS? Was a passenger in one recently and it was very, very quick! 4WD too. A 2016 with low miles could be in budget... https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classi...price-asc&postcode=so533ya&radius=1500&page=1

I've always had a soft spot for Volvo though, this would be my personal choice... https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classi...m-seats=5&advertising-location=at_cars&page=1

You know, I'd have never thought of that Volvo.. lordy that looks proper Q Car....

Focus RS I'm not sold on, just a bit "Max Power" (been there, done that)

But that Volvo...

I know, it's a lovely thing indeed

Sadly I'm stuck with my Passat Tractor as a daily

One day, Rodney...

They do that Volvo in an electric blue. Looks (and sounds) brilliant. Definitely go for the earlier model as it’s got a straight six - the more recent version reverted to a blown four.

I'm currently trying to find a dealer with a decent pre face lift Golf R to test drive.

So the short list is actually the usual suspects:

Golf R - 1st Choice
BMW M135i - 2nd Choice

The Golf still wins as a winter hack (plus I get to tick off the list driving to a ski resort), most of them are "Pauper spec" though, trying to find one with Dynaudio, Heated leather seats and DCC in my budget is a tall order, so I'll move leather to a nice to have.

GOLFR

The problem is a M135i seem much better specified for the same budget,

i35i

Test drives a bit closer to home will sort it out

I’ve got an RSQ3 that is quite good for a daily.

Doesn’t look a great deal different from a standard Q3 but goes pretty well and sounds nice too.
