What courtesy car?

58 reg 116i SE - it couldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding

1k miles on the clock, and judging from the mpg readout when i got it (15mpg), its been ragged to within an inch of its life

Its smooth, quite relaxing when compared to the Z - and will be nice to do 70 up motorways for the next few days. However, when you want a little fun, you just cant. Its nice to be able to just red line it everywhere without breaking the speed limit though

A courtesy car's a courtesy car - at least you get one! And they're officially the fastest car you can drive, apart from hire cars...

Actually, I'd be quite happy to get a drive of a 116i as it's a possible replacement for the wife's Astra: 140k miles on a 7-year old 1.6 and going strongly!

I've only had a courtesy car from BMW once and it was a Mini Cooper*. I was initially a little peeved, as it's hardly commensurate with the car I'd bought, but once I'd driven it I felt a little better. It was certainly more entertaining and characterful than a bog standard E90 hack, and I was impressed with the power and handling. Still, considering the position in the range of car I'd dropped off, I would have expected something in the region of an E90 325i. In fact, as the 1 Series coupe had just been launched, I had expected that they'd fit me up with one of those with a view to tempting me, which would have been nice.

But I suppose we have it reasonably well; my brother generally gets the same as us from the Porsche main dealer. As in exactly the same, normally an E90 320d. And back on topic; he once got a 116i from them, which he actually quite enjoyed and preferred to the 120d he'd once driven.

* Mk.2 MINI Cooper hatchback, Hyper Blue, Black Ray half-leather, 16" 5 Star Blaster wheels, white roof mirrors and stripes.

You cant even get a chirp from the tyres changing from 1st to 2nd, no matter how hard you try.

I hate it.

alex85, yes you've definitely been spoilt with the Z4

I had a 116 as a courtesy car before, and getting out of it one time my jumper snagged on the piece of plastic attached to the door adjacent the B pillar and it snapped the end off about two inches long, while my jumper only had a snagged thread.

Hmmm, build quality is definitely a bit suspect if a woolly jumper breaks it :idunno:

I think that is the only reason BMW makes the ugly little things, so that they know you will want to go back asap to collect your own car.

Jeeeezzz... that colour and those wheels but 3 door. Terrible.

When you travel and rent a car, you pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself that you didn't buy this piece of crap. Loaners are even better because that piece of crap is free. Put up with it. It's only for a little while and you will appreciate your car more when you get it back.

One thing I will say... this thing doesnt have run flats and the ride is sooooo much better than the 123d M Sport on the run flats.

Also, as I said before its nice to drive everywhere at full throttle within the law - glad its a petrol, diesels annoy me even more.

There's nothing like driving a different car to make you appreciate what you've got yourself. My driving's split 50/50 between my Z4 and the VW Transporter van I share with the wife, although the van's surprisingly gutsy (130bhp 2.5l TDI, 1950kgs). In fact, it goes better than my wife's main car, a 1.6 Astra

initila i was offered a 1 series, i declined it saying i wanted a 2 seater sports car, i was not expecting to get new Z4 so i'm quite a happy boy

next week i am working in oxford so i will use the loan car - i would not use my z4 for but hey ho this is a loan car

its a red 35i, is it compulsary to drive round with the roof down? its pouring with rain

Is it usual for dealers to charge for courtesy cars? I imagine not for warranty work but yes for servicing?

I've had a quote of £550 for an inspection 2, and then £10 (to cover insurance) for a courtesy car...!
