Out of interest Sars, did you get a quote from coast2coast on your new motor and play them off against the dealer? I was thinking of trying this next time around depending on what discount BMW comes up with.

Tim.

I wasn't really looking to change, but was contacted out of the blue by Knights North Staffs, I'd been playing with the configurator and spec'd up a few different cars so sent them an email for the 435d. A few days later I did a test drive and they were offering a pretty good discount so I checked with Broadspeed, sent them the same specification, who then beat Knights. This started me test driving the other cars on the list, including the M235i convertible from Coopers York, the discount on which was really good. I preferred the 435d, just seemed better value and just a better buy.

The sales guy, Dan was just really helpful, didn't feel like pushy at all, propbably my most enjoyable experience in buying a car so gave him the same specification for the 435d, it was a few quid more than Coopers but I liked the service from Dan and placed the order there and then. Best decision I've made in a long time.

Have to say though the M235i is a great machine and a lot of fun but I love the fact mine has xdrive

Thanks for the reply Sars, I deal with Knights South Staffs as I only live just up the road from them, have always found Knights to be excellent to be honest and a pleasure to deal with. They tend to call me half way through my PCP (2 years) and ask if I want to change which will be May time next year. I might get a quote from Broadspeed and Coast2coast around that time and see what Knights come back with. I haven't tried an M235i but would probably still go for another M135i purely for a little more practicality. Its a real shame BMW don't import the M135i xDrive.

Tim.

Sorry to hear about your Z4, OP.

Looks like Z4 or 130i if you don't want to go the finance route - and re. the 123d you did have the wrong engine! I had one for over 6 years before I bought my Z4, and last year I bought a 325ti Compact as a daily driver - even at 13 years old that is a far better car than the 123d was!

Longer term I would struggle to decide between E46 M3 and Z4MC - nice dilemna to have!

It's winter now, buy the crappy daily driver and wait for 3-5 months. Then buy the Z4M you really want.
As it's been pointed out the £500 VED soon disappears when you consider the depreciation on other cars. The way good Z4M's are going, it may well be a case of buy now or pay even more in a couple of years time.

Williams bmw quoted me within penny's of broad speed price on my 340 , the guy at broad speed actually said he would buy from them if he was in my position , especially as they are walking distance of where my wife works .
Why the preference for 4wd xdrive ?

I would never buy from Williams, had nothing but problems with two cars bought from Liverpool and Manchester, though at the time it might just be one dealership but when I had issues with another car at a different location I quickly got the impression it is the culture within their group

I couldn't fault them to be fair , everything went great and car came early ,although my wife does work for a very large company just down the road , I'm pretty sure they had their eye on future business when I explained the car policy !

You want a coupe, right? Or a convertible? Or convertible only if you get get a hardttop?

I used to be very enthusiastic about the 2-series, but not so much anymore. The biggest problem is that the smaller size compared to the 4-series doesn't not translate to lower weight. And since it is narrower the weight isn't as well placed. It is expensive, especially with the 6-cylinder, and with that price they force the stupid adaptive suspension on you. Bleh. For the price and the full price payed for the harman kardon you get an inferior HK system, and heavily downgraded interior.

The e46 m3 isn't light, and there are lots of little things that need replacing in a contiguous circle. However, if you always wanted an M and you have the money for repairs right now, then now is the right time. The e46 m3 has that high-revving engine with individual throttle bodies, and it isn't as insane as the e90 m3. Get an e46 M3 as long as they are "fresh enough" to own one. At least it doesn't have engine or (manual) transmission explode all the time.

Personally I am also tempted by the 997 generation of 911 which are very reasonably priced and have well-understood mechanical weaknesses that can be dealt with.

Engine pop on a 997 will cost the same amount to repair as a decent E46 M3 to buy...

Look out for chassis and subframe cracks, noisy engines,SMG problems.. The odd diff has been know to go.

Rust is also a big problem with them, but buy a nice one with decent history and miles and you will have a great car that wont drop like a stone in value.

Heading towards a E46 M3 at the moment, been to see a few but not found the right one yet, a fair few of them seem to have been neglected examples which is a shame but i don't want to buy a money pit.

On the hunt for a decent Manual Coupe, have signed up to M3 Cutters too :)

Idea at present is buy a good M3 keep it for 2 years and pay it off then sell the M3 and some Art for a Z4MC in Red when the right on comes up :)
