What Car - G29 vs Audi TT Roadster

The Z4 doesn't perform well against the TT in this What Car review. Wonder if things would have been different had they tested it against the M40i (but that would have pushed the price well above the TT).

That TT just looks sooooo... Plain. Golf in a t shirt. Except the golf is more useful. The G29, dispite it's challenging look from the front, is a purpose built sports car and has more presents in the metal than a TT ever will.

Do people who actually drive for fun, rather than to get from A to B, read what car? Perhaps there are too few of us. :(

That's a pretty terrible review for the zed. Definitely the worst I've seen for the new car. I think I'd like to see a few more Zed vs TT reviews for a bit of balance before cementing an opinion

I got as far as “The old BMW Z4 wasn’t much fun to drive” and gave up on it. Before I bought my E89 I looked at the TT but couldn’t get past how boring it looked. I definitely made the right choice and have found it a lot of fun to drive.

Good point - I only get the emails. Did have a subscription for a time but its a very dull read. Top Gear mag is much better read.

You'er on a slippery slope.

I just read the whole review. The writer should have prefaced it with "Full disclosure, I hate BMW and convinced myself that I would also hate the Z4 before I even drove it. All I had to do was write the review to fit my biases."
I seriously wonder if the reviewer has his own Audi tucked up in his garage. Every positive found in the Z4 had to have a negative comment added, e.g. The Z4 has 2 cupholders as opposed to the TT's one (if I read it correctly). However, you can't use the cupholders in the Z4 without having the armrest up. What he didn't mention was that the Z4's armrest is specifically designed so that you can raise part of the armrest to fit the cupholders, but still have part of it down to rest your arm on. I think this is quite a clever design, but the writer didn't want to mention it.
...The other benefit is a bigger cubby beneath the centre armrest than you get in the TT, but there’s a flaw: that’s where the Z4’s cupholders are located, so you have to drive with the cubby’s lid open if you’ve stopped for a takeaway coffee..
And so on, it seems, for every point they cover when comparing the two.

The Z4 for me in comparison in the pics looks much more aggresive and sporty! Dont get me wrong i like Audis, But BMW's are more involving to drive for me personally. :driving:

Have cup holders become a key selling point now for a sports car? Don’t think I have ever used a cup holder in any car. Did they actually drive it?
Having only recently sat in one, I liked it, apart from the price of the 40i which I would want. Every “Aldi” we have driven or owned has been so sterile and boring I have no intention of buying another “millennial PlayStation” car.

From being on here for a few years and reading most posts cupholders do seem to come up quite often as a problem whether its because they have broken, the fact there was none fitted or the bad position of them.
Whether or not this type of criticism should come up in a review of a car though Im not sure.

The cupholder 'issue' was just a random example. I'm not sure why reviewers seem to focus on cupholders as a 'reviewable' item. Maybe a US market thing?

Too bad that they rate the TT's driving characteristics as sportier than the Z4.
How much has changed since the original E85? Where did BMW loose that advatage?
Who could have thought that now a TT would be sportier than a z4?
Where and when did BMW go wrong in that department, their (former) speciality trait?

You've got to think that this new generation of Z4 will an absolute depreciation disaster zone. It doesn't look good today, doesn't have the aesthetics that will age well and isn't even that great to drive.....oh, and it costs loads as well. The only thing I can think of to save it is that I haven't seen a single one on the road as yet....rarity might equal retained value.

Maybe, just maybe the TT is the better car.... :fuelfire:

This is exactly it. Everybody on here will obviously be biased towards the Z4 no matter what model and might find it difficult to comprehend that there might be a car out there thats better than it.

Seemed a pretty honest review bar the cup holder mistake imho.

Personally I found the car a huge disappointment, it feels just an evolution of an E89 not a brand new platform. The Audi looks like a dung beetle so I wouldn’t buy either car.

'Everybody' is a sweeping statement. I would ditch my Z4 tomorrow if you could find me a similarly priced and specced car I like the look of. It's just a car.
