What can you replace a Z4 with?

Replying to many posts!

1) Asking the missus - No no, it's not that bad! It's my fault for giving the impression of great reluctance at having a kid! It's more the case of me wanting to have the cake (i.e. have a kid) and eat it (i.e. have a sports car). If I insist on large 2+2 (e.g. Mercedes CL) she won't say no but then why make "first time parenthood" any more difficult than it already is!

2) I agree on a Focus ST/RS - They are nice fast cars but my god the colours (orange? green?) and image are a bit dodgy no? I never considered myself as a badge snob but a ST/RS is just too boy-racer for me.

3) What work I do - I work in IT so (at least at the moment) I only use the car on weekends. Working in central London means never having the chance to drive to work. Or the ability to afford it (congestion charge + £4000 odd parking permit per year!).

4) Surely I cannot afford an X6? Are you teasing me? Really? I would sell my kidney for an X6!

5) No one has commented about the Porche Cayenne. Is it such a bad idea?

6) Breaker - you have owned a Coupe and now own the new Z4. Are they as different as Jeremy Clarkson claimed? The reviews I have read suggest that the Coupe was slightly more driver oriented and "hard core" (or as hard core as a Z4 can be) whereas the new one is closer in personality to the SLK.

2 cars would have been an option if the additional cost was simply the purchase cost. But when you add all the other additional costs of insurance, MOT, servicing and repairs it might be a little out of our reach. And (apparently) children are costly to rear so this means even more expenses.

Lot of dreaming going on here and I don't mean to be boring but:
Once you have kids (they never stop at one):
It's likely you'll drop from 2 incomes to one at the very time you have to then provide for 3 or 4.
You're probably in the lifecycle stage of going up the property ladder and about to hit your highest expenditure and relatively lowest income level.
I think you need to look at the lifestyle you will have. Will you drive to work - If so you wife WILL need a second car. It's almost impossible without for shopping, kids clubs,sport, doctors, shopping, etc.

From there you'll see why so many people drive hideous people carriers and the like :thumbsdown:

Do the maths on a cheap 2nd car and it works easily compared to the running costs of the various exotica you are talking about.

EDIT - I posted this after your most recent post so some of the comments are out of sync. now. I was actually doing some income earning real work :thumbsup:

I'd probably go along with what he said. Saying that, for me, the new one is a much better car to drive though! I think you could own both to be honest they are that different! The 35i is definitely quicker on the road in overtaking acceleration!

Nice those X6's aren't they! Hoping to be my next purchase once I have got the roadster/sports car bit out of my system! :wink:

Im with CJ I'm afraid.....babies and 2-doors simply don't mix, its a bloody nightmare. :thumbsdown:

I'd keep the Zed and budget for a family runabout as well.....plenty of budget 4-door plodders around that you won't mind crapping up with dents from pushchairs and shopping trolleys, not to mention sticky drink and food flying all over the place.... :thumbsup:

My vote also goes for a runabout that the kids can puke in, scratch, jump all over the seats with muddy boots, and the wife can sprape with the buggy etc. Small kids wreck cars,so a runabout makes sense. How about a Zafira VXR, properly fast and 7 seats, keeping the Z for yourself AND your sanity!! :D
 
yeah go for the shed on wheels for the family, apply bangernomics and buy a large old car which if it needs more than a couple of hundred spending on it- junk it and get another one. Plenty of rep mobiles, 4 dr big saloons out there. Ran an ageing Avensis with the kids, big enough for three in the back with two sprogs in seats
 
There have been some silly suggestions here. We are talking only one baby here aren't we.

The answer is simple. A baby in a carry cot will fit in a Z4C boot with ease. Even the Z4MC is OK up to about 2 years old.

My neice has had hours of sleep in the boot - she loves it.

I'm not sure how legal that is but pull the luggage cover over and nobody is the wiser.

uuugggghhhhhh!!!! i am having flash backs to the crud i have personaly have to pull out from the behind the back seats :o i used to have a 325 b4 my z and it was like a chemistry set for discovering the various stages of the decomposing cycle of chocolate buttons and smarties :headbang:
