What camera do you use ??

Thanks. My camera gear cost way more than my z4 and is my main hobby in retirement. That being said spending lots of cash does not guarantee good photos. I like to compare it to cooking. I could have the finest ingredients, the greatest stove and cooking pans but my cooking would still be dire. Give a top chef some average ingredients and tools and they will serve up something really tasty.

I did wonder (re: the qualty of your equipment). I am always intrigued as to how much of the photos i am seeing/enjoying is the quality of equipment vs capability of the user vs photoshop capability.

I bought a basic DSLR (Nikon 3300) and a couple of lenses but definitely need to better understand light/composition and how to do some basic editing/enhancement.

My old line manager ordered a couple of data projectors for work about 15 years ago, and for whatever promotional reason, a couple of 4, maybe 5 megapixel Fuji pocket sized digital cameras arrived with them as well.
One for you, one for me. Thanks boss.
It was my first digital camera and I used it for years until it inevitably packed up. It was great.
What I missed about it most (and still do) when it came to looking for a replacement was the unavailability of a built in viewfinder in a cheap-ish camera. They'd all moved over to LCD screens by then.

A good way to start is to think about.

How much to spend
How big (does it need to fit in a pocket)
Will you pursue other types of photography like sport or wildlife or landscape etc.
Will you want to change lenses or have a one lens does all type of camera.
For my use the best camera has a full frame sensor and interchangeable lenses but if size, weight, ease of use, cost, etc are important then you may need to look at other options. A phone with a good camera has a lot going for it.

Some of my stuff here but no cars :) https://paulstickley.com/

That website contains some really lovely photos Paul, well done

Good advice here and agree with tomscott on the used market bought a used 1DX from Jessops couple of years ago and it was like new but less than half price of a new one.

Some high quality work on your website Paul especially like some of the landscapes a nice natural look to them

I have a Canon 70d but fitted with an 18-135 USM lens, it weighs a ton compared to my old but still working Canon XSi 450d. As advanced as those cameras are, they can’t seem to get the same visual pop that I used to get with my EOS 630 Film camera. I just bought a mint Canon A-1 with some real glass but stupid cheap FD lenses so it will be interesting to see the kind of results it provides.

...ending today, OP

Going back to your original post, this type of thing is what your likely to be looking for in terms of next steps. IMO don’t get into lenses, bodies, etc etc etc unless you get into photography in a more involved way and enjoy it. It can be a big waste of time and money. My advice is to learn to step up from a phone in a compact and risk free way first.

Just an update on what camera I bought in the end... Thanks for all your help btw..
I was on a very tight budget especially as my long haired general thought I was bonkers wanting one. After much research I found I liked the Fujifilm 'X' series cameras the best, the retro look and the X Trans sensors with great colour rendition and sharpness. I ended up buying from Ebay a Fujifilm X-E1 in mint condition for just over a 100 squid. For the lens I went for a Pergear 50mm from China for 60 pounds, had great reviews on you tube, the metal construction and f 1.8 was a winner for me. It is a manual lens, no automatic focus or 'F' stops but that is the kind of photography I wanted to do anyhows having achieved a city and guilds in photography when I was younger..
Waiting on delivery of lens, cant wait to get shooting, hopefully will take some nice shots of my Z4...

I always seem to hold onto my old cameras, here is a snapshot of my Slr history

I use in no particular order, Canon T90 ( 2 of ) nearly all lenses, Nikon F1, Nikon D7000, Lenses from 24mm to 500mm and Bronica ETRS 50mm, 80mm, 300mm lenses. Not done any 'serious' photography for years but cannot bring myself to sell the film cameras as I know they are worth peanuts and cost a small fortune.

Just to say, those great lenses you have can still be used on quite a range of digital cameras nowadays with a lens adaptors. You cant use the auto focus or aperture on the digital camera anymore, however it gives you the old school photography where you still have to use manual focus/ aperture. That is what I have opted to do and cant wait to start shooting...
