What audio upgrades have you done?

Afternoon all, I'm finding the standard 'Business' audio a bit lacking and doesn't seem to really have a lot on my old MX5's BOSE setup. It's not so much the sound quality is poor because it's not I just feel it could be better.

I would like to keep the standard headunit (not a fan of the aftermarket look of most stereos) if possible. What would you all recommend I start with?
 
Mine only had the 6 speaker setup.

I disconnected the tweeters in the door pillar and wired some 2-way speakers in the blanks of the door card.

I also put in some 6x9 speakers where the cubby holes are behind the seats (disconnected the two 10mm speakers too).

I also have a dension 300 which gives me USB music.

The whole system is better but still much worse than my previous VW golf. Maybe an amp would help.
 
Car started with base system. Footwell bass, tweeters in door sails and mid behind seats. Changed the following:

  • Removed all standard front speakers
  • Fitted focal 165AS3 3 way speakers in front
  • Disconnected rear mid range speakers
  • Fitted custom sub woofers in rear cubbybox
  • Fitted second pioneer DAB radio in rear drop down stowage area behind lid
  • Fitted IR remote control sender/receiver to control the hidden from view second radio
  • Fitted 4 channel power amp in boot
