Many thanks everyone for the innovative suggestions, I suppose I could pop into a Bimmer Agent and ask them what its for
They will charge you £50 for the "diagnosis"

the item attached to that part looks like a brodit phone holder. does it fit to the side of the centre console to allow the phone mount to face the driver. someone may have got a custom bit of trim made to make the mounting of the holder a bit nicer. if it is that i may be interested in having it off you.

I think the last thread may have hit the mark. I have attached two more photos showing some other (I assumed non-related) items that I found in the car. The small items look like a phone adapter (possibly I-phone) and how it may possibly be fitted into the mystery object, what I thought was a swiveling slide on connector (which has a velvety surface) has grooves shaped to possibly accept a phone sliding in. Still can't work out as to how it all fits into the car.

This is a cigarette holder that is usually clipped inside one end of the ashtray. I removed mine also and it now resides in the glove box  P1010918.JPG

QED - that's seems to be exactly where it fits. Many thanks to all of you for your innovative suggestions. Not much use to me since I am Android by phone and the car has Bluetooth Hands Free any way.

Great to have so many replies. With your help we have solved the first item, as for the second and third pictures I have enclosed another picture from a different view point. The item is covered in leather trim (as the cars seat leather) and has what appears to be a swiveling bracket at the LH end that slides on to something plus a metal clip at the RH end

I dont think it is a part of stock e85
