What a friendly board - New Member after being a long time Porsche owner

Hi All,

Just wanted to say hello as I've just bought my first Z4 and have found the board (and people on it) immensely helpful and friendly. Much more so than other boards for the other marques I have enjoyed driving.

So, why the Z4? I've ridden motorbikes since 18 years old and only passed my car test 7 years ago when I was 38! From giving up bikes I still wanted the wind in my face. So, over those last years I've gone through:

1.6 MX 5 Mark 1
1.6 MX 5 Mark 1 Supercharged
1.8 MX 5 Mark 1 Turbocharged
Boxster (986) - Broke this one quite badly while driving down an oak tree lined road full of acorns :-(
Boxster (986)
911 (996) Convertible - Had to get a family car as my wife bought s 335d - I still own this one as they are fun to drive
Cayenne Turbo (Great fun for a car with a roof) - Wife told me I had to get a proper family car :-)
Boxster (987) Gen 2 - Only had this 3 days when a guy in Skoda rammed me. However there, was an upside....see next 3 cars below
2015 Porsche Boxster (Insurance Provided)
2015 Porsche 911 Convertible (Insurance Provided)
2015 Porsche 911 Targa (Insurance Provided)
Z4 Silver 2005 Roadster 3.0i SE (M - Tech Susp) (80k)

So, after all those Porsches why get a Z4?

Purely to see what they are like. My wife's 335d is a pleasure to drive and I figured, why not.

Looks wise I think they are great, although I must say I prefer the Coupe. The engine is a smooth as butter. I don't see what the issue is with the suspension. It's not firmer than any of the Porsches I've driven although it does have a bit more roll.

The one I bought has been slammed so out go the current springs tomorrow as I value the bottom of the car. It was tram-lining like you wouldn't believe when I bough it but a new set of front tyres removed a lot of that. The wear was incredibly bad on the inside of both tyres. After the springs it's going straight onto a hunter for 4 wheel alignment and I'm hoping at that point it will go where I want it to....quickly.

I have one question I'm hoping someone can help with that is probably related to the current geometry. When I'm cornering sharply I can feel the front ABS kicking in (and see the light.) A good example of this is when I'm joining the M4 at the Wokingham junction heading towards London. Not going overly fast but you can feel the wheels having the ABS applied. As the car is currently slammed I'm hoping this will disappear. Anyone with a lowered car experience this as well?

Oh and are the standard lights really bad for visibility? My car has had the lights changed to the 2xcite projectors and it's like driving by candlelight :-)

Cheers
Carl

Welcome, sounds like an interesting history of cars. Would also like to see what bikes you have owned? Never had one myself but do appreciate a nice collection as my uncle is a bike nut.

You can say that again!

Welcome to the forum Carl.

Hi Carl,
Welcome to the forum, cool selection of motors you've owned.
Lots of Porches :) Ive never driven or owned one - maybe one day, but for now I couldn't be happier with my Zed.
Its great to hear that you rate the Zed so highly having owned such a prestigious array of other cars

Welcome Carl.

Planning on owning a couple of P words at some point. The owners clubs are worries though as they don't seem to be much fun. Here and the Supra owners club are pretty good.

Welcome to the forum.

Interested to hear a comparison of the Z4 against the Boxster

Welcome Carl.

To answer one of your questions - on the E85 pre-facelift cars the standard headlights are rubbish. I had a 3.0 E85 (2004) previously and I couldn't believe BMW could fit such poor headlights on a car with that kind of performance and top speed. Don't let that dampen the experience though too much. I loved mine.

Hello and welcome, yes this is a pretty decent place to while away some spare time, lots of us have moved on from zed ownership but remain like a stubborn stain.

Oh and guys I can't believe we are at 13 posts and someone hasn't

:worthless:
