Called my local Ford dealer to book the S-Max daily drive in for a 50,000 mile service. Total cost to you sir, £180 incl. Only adders will be if consumable items off the service list need doing.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it...

To be fair,i've always found/heard that both Ford and Vauxhall are cheapest for servicing, but neither are "premium" brands......and neither is Seat or VW any better, yet both Seat and VW are almost identical to BMW/AUDI/MERC,for main servicing on alot of their cars.
eg.SEAT LEON CUPRA,BRAND NEW 2003 MODEL i had was £250-£300 for MAIN services...my Wifes VW GOLF tsi sport(20k car new,in 2008),which shes had since nearly new, costs her upto £300 for MAIN/INSP2 type "longlife" service/as vw offer 2 levels of servicing...std/10k or longlife,20k miles...the latter using a diffirent synthetic oil,and is dearer.

Compare this to a £36k 2005 z4 3.0i,at a BMW dealer for insp2 srvc,which is £350...not too far apart.

p.s the vw golf gets serviced every year/just my wife does 16k mls per anum, and doesnt want to be doing services evry 10k :)

Oil Service equivalent I guess. Plus pollen filter and a couple of other odds and sods. A major service was about £300. So far this thing has been bullet proof. I'd intended to run it for two years and swap it for something else, but it's big, airy, comfortable and economical. Plus all the toys a gadget lover like me could ask for so I took out an extended warranty instead. I'll run it for another year, keep an eye on residual values and sell it when it feels right (or when I spot something shiny enough)

It does indeed make you wonder.

I have an old Honda for booting about and in 80k miles it's never spent a day in the garage or needed anything other than annual servicing which has never cost more than £200. I also have the use of a Ford Focus via work and it's the same. Never a problem in 5 years, just cheap annual servicing and it's a bloody good drive.

I was actually reading an article on pistonheads this morning that raised the argument of why pay a premium for a bog standard 4 pot German rep mobile. A lot of less premium brands make cars that are just as good if not better at being cars but will cost you much less. I find it hard to argue with that point.

Other side of the coin. I expect and don't mind paying a premium to run and maintain a lovely straight 6.

1 Certainly on that side of the fence, worth every extra penny...

My friend has a Hyundai i10,weeny little hatchback. The 1st service from new ( annual sevicing required) was £ 230, the 2nd annual service ( only done 13k miles) was over £ 300. I rekon I could sevice a Porsche 911 for 2 years less than that.Added to that it has had 3 re calls which she didn't know about until it broke down and went into the dealership again,it guzzles fuel ( 37 mpg) and is generally a pretty nasty little car. It's not just BMW dealers who know how to charge.
