Hi all had my 23i auto about 4 months now & what with one thing & anotther ive hardly driven it ,took it out today for a spin in the countryside & wow i fell in love again .I initially wasnt sure in my choice if im honest with the 2.5 engine & the auto box but i must say its a great car ,its got plenty of go & the auto box is fab .The sound of that straight 6 is something to behold .I see a lot of people looking to backbox delete ect but in all honesty i dont think the car needs it .It doesnt chuck you back in your seat like a lot of cars ive had but once its going its going.I just thought id put my 2 pencevworth in & say i think the 23i auto is actually a great car & im glad ive got one .I know the 3l ,3.5 & mapped 2ls & 2.8s might be quicker but i think the 2.5 gets a bad press by many when its actually no slouch & a great car to drive .cheers marcus

Agreed, this is biblical advice to get the most from the 23i, I had a manual car, dirivng over Dartmoor in 3rd gear pretty much all the time really keeps the motor singing and responsive.tintoverano said:keep the rev over 4klavy1966 said:

The 23i is a really well balanced roadster, once you get used to it you can really sling it around and have fun.... ENJOY
I'm pleased with my 23i... I guess I would say that a good 3.5 would be a lot better of course...
Going back to this engine I feel it will lots of life as it's a non turbo and that engine design seems a reliable, long term engine if you follow normal maintenance practise.
I believe that getting the handling better is fair the real fun is to be had with the Z4. When funds permit and life is more normal that at present I plan to do the most I can to the suspension and handling.. Superpro suspension upgrades and then a coil and spring package that works best for the Z4 - I'm still not sure what that package is so more homework needed there...

I think the owners of the 23i will have the least engine problems and could prove to be bullet proof. After all they have been building these engines a long time. Acceptable economy and it's fun to rev the engine, even some early reviewer said the 35's were too powerful and unnecessary and less engaging than the 23i.

I had a nearly new 2.3 back in 2010 and now have a 3.5is. There is quite a difference in straight line performance between the two but not many occasions on our roads when you can exploit the extra performance. The handling is no better than other cars in the range. I love my car and wouldn’t voluntarily swop it for anything else but I could live happily with the smaller engine. It has six cylinders and is silky smooth and you still can enjoy roof down motoring.

I think the complaint was that you just reached speed limits so quick, there was no time to enjoy the engine revving up, the 23i has to be worked.
