West Sussex - can anyone help with wheels

I want to send all my wheels off for a 'proper' refurb but have a small problem in that, once the car is in the garage, space is very limited and I can't get the car up on axle stands and remove all four wheels at once - I could possibly manage to remove two wheels and send them off in pairs but that would involve a extra time off work waiting for couriers etc.

Does anyone within striking distance of Worthing, West Sussex have a spare set of wheels (or just two at a pinch) that I could borrow/rent - they need to be at least 17" to clear the brakes, but it doesn't matter if they're winters, cracked, have bald tyres...whatever, I don't want to drive on them, all I need to be able to do is roll the car from the drive into the garage where it will stay while my wheels are refurbished (should take a week, two at the most).

I'd be quite happy to pay a reasonable fee for the privilege of borrowing them

Sorry, cant help with the wheels (IIRC Ade has/had a set of winters, although he's probably too far away) - interested on what colour you are going for with the wheels, Perry? You staying with Sparkle Silver? Am also going for a refurb, but looking to change the colour (subtle change though) to tone down the silver slightly... Will be putting the car on axle stands though.
 
take car to http://www.wheelworksuk.co.uk/ and they will do it in a day .Top quality too .

Yes, I'm sure Ade would lend me his winters but Westest Wales is a bit far for that sort of borrowing :) I can't leave the Alpina on the drive on axle stands...

I think I'll stay with the original colours - I did think about shadow chrome or even black as Ade's Black Dynamics looked quite nice but, unless I have a major change of heart, it looks like it'll be standard silver

There are a number of places that look good but the standout place at the moment is Platinum in Swindon - Ade is on very good terms with the owner and their work meets Ade's (unbeleivably high :wink: ) standards so they must be good
 
A fair way for you but Lepsons in Gillingham Kent are running a deal where you can leave the car with them for free while they do your wheels. Depends if you can get someone to tail you there and drop you off. Or they do have a courtesy car.

There is a refurb company from c Portsmouth that often turns up at Goodwood Breakfast Club

It turns out that 3-series E46 wheels are OK as well so I'm going to contact a local breaker to see if they've got any and if they'd be interested in a 'rental' arrangement...

But, to keep options open, if anyone has a winter set of E46 wheels...?
 
17/18" E46 wheels will fly on, Perry. Offsets are fine so will clear the suspension (more of an issue than the brakes) and won't foul the body. I would happily loan you my winters: perhaps you should leave yours at mine next month :D Alternatively, I can courier you 2 at your cost for FOC loan. Should cost around £40-50 all-in return, and I have suitable boxes (BTW, the winters fit our F21 :D ).

As regards The Wheel Specialist...seen some of theirs and I wouldn't pay them in buttons. Lepsons have cashflow issues as they lost mega contracts, so be careful leaving £2k-worth of alloys with them. Platinum are uber spot-on, and Scott (the MD, and he does all the painting) is ANAL about the job. You know I won't go anywhere else! The RS wheels are less sparkly with Scott's Powder Coat, and I prefer them this way. Mention me, his ar$e will tighten with worry, and he'll give you a top job and 5% off an acid dip, repair, powder coat and lacquer and not silly money. Not silly money, and a PROPER job. Same-day? Not a hope as it's an overnight strip, then repair, all of the paint work and a bake. 2 days is to be expected to get wheels done properly. Plus if he finds an issue (eg, a crack, buckle or twist (you know that story)) he will contact you and ask if he can repair it, not just paint over it. Top service, product and man.

For the love of god, don't go black! Been there, was OK on that particular car, but a 'mare to maintain and they look sh1t when they are a touch dirty. Silver looks far better.

Cheers Ade, once I know that I can sort the wheels, I'll order the valves - I've got the part number that you posted a while back. If I get them too soon I'll put them 'somewhere safe', won't be able to find them when I need them and end up having to buy another 4 only for the originals to turn up a day after they're no longer needed :?
 
Thanks to everyone for their offers of loan wheels and suggestions for refurbishers etc., but, after a bit of umm'ing and aaah'ing, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a set of winter wheels with appropriate rubber

I took some advice from soon-to-be-1-alpade as I wanted a set that would fit the F20 for winter use and #320 for emergency use (such as this refurb), as he has a set that fits both his RS and his F21, and finally settled on a set of nice, simple 17" MSW Style 19 rims fitted with winter tyres.

Initially, I spent quite a bit of time looking on eBay & gumtree for a second-hand set but, once I decided that winter rubber for the F20 was a sensible thing, I realised that my car-related OCD, and the ear-bashing from SWMBO, would mean that I'd end up having to get them refurbished. The cheapest for anything reasonable (i.e. not totally shagged) that I'd feel safe allowing my wife to drive around on was about £150, then once you add in the cost of refurbishment, and the associated running about involved with that, new aftermarket winter wheels seemed much more sensible
 
Sorry, I must have missed some stuff..thought you just wanted some alloys to put on whilst you got yours refurbed ^_^

Nah, that's fine - you're right, that was what I started off looking for, but I worked out that, if I borrowed some wheels, I'd be paying for a courier or fuel for collection & return (plus a bottle of scotch for whoever lent me them), so I also started looking for old sets that i could buy for about the same money - say £50-£100 - on the basis that they might come in useful again.

While I was looking, the idea that a winter set would be a sensible idea just sort of grew - my wife is a district nurse and she uses the F20 to visit patients in their homes and winter tyres would make things a lot safer for her when there's snow/ice about.

I think it's one of those 'man maths' things - start off thinking you're just going to be spending a little bit and then the 'feature creep' sets in and, before you know it, you end up spending ten time as much :wink:
