Were M badges optional on an LCI E89?

The ones on the side near the indicator
On an M Sport model
Maybe the previous owner of my car removed them

It seems some later cars had them from the factory so these owners shouldn’t be tard & feathered like other less genuine impostors :P

Yup, I'm with you Mr SB.
I do hope though, that the badge-removers don't forget the ones on the wheels and just leave that odd looking recess. :poke:

Well I’m shocked but it appears that post LCI Z4s did have a M badge on the flank if they had M aerodynamics package...

Love that.

You can have mine, they're just extra weight, even on an ///M

You can't have the S54 though. :P

The  is your opinion, and fair enough.
But my, equally fair opinion is.....................
They are not 'M' cars, but 'M-Sport', and that is a pure marketing ploy by BMW, just like all the manufacturers do.
It is not a 'wannabe' adding M badges to make their car something it isn't.
We've had 2x 220d convertibles, a 335d and now a 120d, all with the M-Sport design package and all with small M badges on the wings and wheels. No-one ever mistakes them for a real M car. I preferred them for the aesthetic look tbh.
Surely the definition of a 'purist' is someone who keeps their car as it came from the factory? My Z is a 20iS M-Sport. It has the badges fitted where BMW intended them and that is where they will stay, but I would not consider adding extras. I will never try to pass my car off as an 'M' and it would be an uneducated fool who mistook it for such.

My lci m-sport didn’t have those fitted, it had the badge delete option from the factory. From memory i think it was listed under the sh*tstorm avoidance section

The badges do alter the perception of those with a limited knowledge of a brand. I recall a run down to Lands End with Zedward aboard. Parked up with a very tidy 2.0 E85 next to me, a random guy in the car park walked over and ask if the one with the ///M badges on was quicker than the other.

Natrualy he left ears bleeding, eyes sagging, after a full rundown on the two cars from yours truly and now views any BMW with an //M badge as a breed apart from the heard :D

So, I guess you can blame me and my ilk, for helping the marketing men out by enthusing about our cars.

So, as a purist you should keep it like that.

Not so sure about the coloured strips on the grille though :poke:

G29 M40i badged and sold by BMW as that. Nothing added or taken off.

It’s not an “M” car but it’s a better all round drive than my previous M2 and quicker, apparently!

My wife wont let me take the badges off the side of the car, to be fair though it is her car
Does anybody really care that its an sdrive? Most probably dont know what it stands for.

I’m sorry you misread my faux angst..frankly I don’t give a damm if it’s got 0/1 /2/4/8/16 small/large M badges..if you see the list of cars that BMW fits that specific badge too it’s quite a list..

All manufacturers try to imbue their ‘lesser’ cars with the glow of their top of the range models..nothing new there..what I find amusing is the ‘s-drive’ bit...bringing attention to the fact that the car has only 2 wheel drive :driving:

Ah well, you see I like that bit, as unless I'm mistaken it means RWD! Not granny's FWD. :D
