Well I'm back in the Ford club!

After selling my Zed on here a few months ago (actually, about six weeks ago but it feels like forever!) due to moving away with work, I've been running my E39 as my only car.

I've spent the best part of £1500 on the car in the last 6 weeks and at the weekend the autobox went pop.

Deciding that my priorities now must be cheap, reliable motoring I've returned to my roots (Blue is short for Blue Oval, my original forum handle) and ended up with a 2005 Focus 1.8 Zetec, 39K, FSH, £2,000.

To say I'm gutted about the money I wasted on the E39 is an understatement! On the plus side, the Focus seems to be a good'un, is solid as a rock and handles like it's on rails.

So, my plan now is to save up until I can afford to buy a BMW that's young enough to still be in warranty, I'm sick of chucking money at cars with 150K+ on the clock!

530iA SE, had a lot of options as well, I'd even just spent £650 on winter tyres which will probably only fit an E39 :(

Looks like I'll end up selling her to a breaker to pick the body clean of anything valuable

Forgot to mention, on the plus side I managed to re-use one of the E39 mats in the Focus which was missing it's drivers mat!

A few years ago I went through a bad time at work resulting in being off sick for several months. During that time I decided I couldnt afford my BMW so sold it and bought a 2003 Focus estate.

It was one of the best cars I ever had...practical, roomy etc.

However, as soon as I could, I got a BMW again, but often miss that car.

The Focus is a very good car. We have a 2006 1.8 Style at work, it never breaks and it drives very well. The steering is especially nice, it has a lovely weight and is very direct.

I think a mixture of modern cars becoming more complicated and the rising labour costs at most garages due to all the diagnostic crap they have to buy is just making it too difficult to run some cars. It's got to the point that buying a brand new car on a finance deal will often work out less expensive over several years.

:o

I feel for you sold my Z4 in spring at the start of all the good weather and still miss it now!

But seriously a focus despite being a good daily car (i'm in one twice a week so do have experience with them) does NOT handle like its on rails, I fear the lack of Z4 may have made you delusional. Go to the docs, the only logical cure is for him/her to perscribe you a Z4 on the NHS

I like fords, I had a 1.6 focus when younger, my Mrs has a new shape focus which is a cracking car too!

You're possibly right, rails may be an exaggeration. I've been driving a 160K mile 530i SE for several months, maybe it's just the comparison to that which makes the Focus feel the way it does.

I'd still argue though that of all the hum-drum family hatchbacks that were in production in 2005 (or even still are), the Focus sits near the top of the pile for handling. :)

I have just gone the other way from a mk2 ford focus titanium to a z4c. i wasnt an easy change as my previous car was solid, economical, practically new and so practical. Moved flats in 1 car load. every sensible fibre in me told me not to change cars but it was just not fast enough from the 1.6l engine

Yea I get that when I go from my 520d towcar to the 328 track car, Its like.... Wow :driving: fastest thing I ever driven, even though it was so much slower than the Z4 although its so noisy and stiff it feels like your going a lot quicker than you are!

First thought... "wow, only 2k, that's cool!"

Second thought... "my 2004 Z4 ain't worth a lot more than that"

Tommo Two - you make a good point actually, I cruised the whole way to Brighton at between 70 and 80mph, any faster and it felt like I was really hoofing it, whereas in the E39 any slower and it felt like I wasn't moving!
