Weird problem with rain sensor

I borrowed a friends 2003 Z4. I started it up and everything was fine, but I noticed the rain sensor was hanging loose. I stopped the car and put it back in place. Now this seems weird, but the car wouldn't start; I turned the key and nothing happens. I pulled the sensor out and the car starts fine. Has anyone seen this before? Does it just need a new rain sensor?

Did you have to remove the trim from near the rear view or was the sensor already exposed?

It was already loose and the sensor was not in its proper place.
