Weird problem with interior heating

Really cold day today - engine was fully warmed up after a few minutes but blower wouldn't blow anything but cold air until about 40 minutes after the start of my journey - regardless of temperature setting - then all of a sudden warm air started to emerge - anyone had this before and know what the problem is?

have a read through this thread . maybe some pointers ? http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=43687

If its any use I had similar problems in a frontera and my dads fiesta. Frontera seed prone to the heater matrix blocking and just some alternate flushing helped. The fiesta had a bypas valve that had jammed thus blocking hot water into the heater matrix totally. It Had similar symptoms. ... Just a few ideas to get you thinking

mine did this, and tried the bleeding procedure mention on another post, ie switch on press the buttons and leave it for 15 minutes, could hear the air bleed out. however this was not the problem and ended up at the dealers as all the indi had no idea and it was the thermostat. turned out to be the waterpump

Still got the problem but still intermittent. BMW dealer couldn't find anything wrong...

not saying it is but . . . . . cold air from blower when engine is warm followed by sudden warm air after a while can indicate head gasket problem
worth investigating maybe through a indy who is used to dealing with BMW,s & more specifically 2.5,s ?
my workmates van did the exact same the whole of last winter & head gasket failure was the cause :(
have a read here for now http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Trouble/Headgasket.htm

Thanks Deka what's the bleeding procedure exactly?

Mr Wilks - strange thing is the temp gauge is behaving normally but will get it checked out

Here you go..

The N52 cooling system has unique bleed procedures due to the electric water pump. Do NOT rev the engine! Otherwise, your recollection is very close. The procedure described below covers most situations. A special procedure requiring the DIS computer is required for engine or heater core replacement.

1. Engine must not be hot. Remove coolant cap and open bleed screw located just to the top (rear) right of cap. Slowly add coolant up to lower edge of filler neck. Close bleed screw once bubble free coolant comes out of bleed port. Replace cap. Do not open cap or screw during bleed procedure.
2. Connect a battery charger to avoid depleting battery.
3. Turn on ignition ( 2nd stop). Do not start engine. Set heater to max temp and activate “Auto” climate control button. Reduce fan to lowest setting.
4. Press and hold accelerator to floor for 10 seconds. Engine must not be running.
5. Bleeding procedure begins and runs for about 12 minutes.
6. If bleeding needs to be done repetitively, DME must be reset between procedures by removing key from ignition for at least 3 minutes. Re-enter procedure at step 3 above.
