Weird insurance

It's that time of the year again when I start the chore of insurance shopping.

Currently with Hastings insurance is around £650 for a 50 y/o environmental health officer (me) and a teacher (she who must be obeyed) as a named driver 8k miles per annum (2k being work related) 1k excess and a remap (not put on yet).

Has anyone else noticed that the same info on different comparison sites gets different prices from the same insurer (cheapest is £390 atm)

Thats bloody expensive.. less miles in mine but im only paying £200 fully comp, maybe its the business use putting it up?

Eeeek... my 23i only costs me £186 and Im 54, 5k per annum and just me (she hates it and won't go near it) and its garaged. I get renewals in and find out that Im always better going onto a comparison site and then funnily enough end up with the same company for less, work that one out! When I've challenged them about it they say its a different underwriter. No matter what its is, car /house insurance or energy suppliers, they rely on your complacency and not to going looking about for a cheaper price.

I do the comparison sites then go direct to the cheapest that they recommended and it’s often cheaper.

The insurance company must pay the fat man to sing or the meerkat to dish out cuddly toys as commission.

Just renewed through Hastings.

Fully comprehensive, protected 9yr NCD, Deb as named driver. £250 excess. 45yr 10k miles.

Cost £184.

I seem to end up having to visit one of the comparison websites each time car or house insurance is due for renewal to get a sensible price!

It's like they don't want to retain business. :headbang:

Interesting you say that. My wife won't touch mine either ( :D ) but I always add her to the insurance as it drops the price for me  . I get both the Zed & the X1 fully comp for £380, mind you I am an old git  .

Totally agree :headbang:. For the last few years I've swapped between LV & Aviva. LV this year sent an email saying don't bother to contact us if you don't want to renew! As with a lot of online companies I've found they're using Covid as an excuse.

I have to have the business use, even though I only do around 1k business miles it's a condition of my employment (although I get free parking throughout the Borough).

The bonus is that I get to use the zed as a mobile office!

Oddly enough my wife won't go near the zed, but having her named brings the premium down.

If I don't have the remap, quotes go down by £80.

Might be because I live in the part of the UK which has the highest number of uninsured drivers.

Particularly annoying as I was in court (for work) and one of the cases I sat in on was driving without insurance (20y/o with a hot hatch) fined a total of £600 and because he didn't have an income he was given a year to pay (I got turned down to be a magistrate - apparently cutting the clackers off an offender isn't an approved punishment)

The forums resident (Chris Knott) insurance agent did mine last year and this at a very competitive price. - Unfortunately now they only seem to attempt to better your quote that you've already had provided!

That was exactly my experience with them this year - only interested in beating my renewal by 10%. :( And I got cover elsewhere for more than 10% less than their quote!

If I try them again next year I won't tell them what the renewal price is.

I worked in insurance 10 odd years ago so might be able to shed some light.

Some companies will charge you 30-40% for business use. It really depends on who the policy is with.

You will probably get lots of different quotes with the same company say "Equity red Star" as different brokers "Chris Knott, sheilas' wheels, Adrian flux etc" will all have different ways of "calculating your risk".

Is your car brand new Jason? If not then perhaps you live in a high risk postcode. Perhaps you have some convictions of thefts on the record or your Mrs might have.

For context I am 36, 1 years NCB, comp on an 86 si and I am paying 215 quid.

Also for context to my renewal quote was 374.

Just got to do the funky chicken dance (like you do with Sky, Vodafone et al). And get it down.

It was common practice "back in the day" to put renewals up between 15-25%. I worked on the sales side so can't really give exact figures and it might have changed in the last 10 years.

Insurance is purely statistically driven so I am sure they have worked out that a good percentage won't bat an eyelid on the increase in price and if they do they can match a quote or get close to it and people will stay with them because they can't be arsed to move. Win-win for them.

My greenflag is up for renewal to and for being a non claiming customer of a year they have put that up 7 quid compared to if I was a new customer.

Weekend car so I will just let that lapse and sign up as a new customer so I don't have to do the dance with them.

Thanks for this Mgrlane,

Latest quotes are £381 without a remap and £477 with (Admiral).

I have to have the class 1 business as a condition of my employment, but I've reduced it to 2k business miles per annum (did around 200 last year so that'll be plenty).

Next question is whether it's worth getting the remap as I haven't pulled the trigger on that yet (it'd be nice but not essential) - I have a feeling that this'll open up a can of worms

Depends who you have your insurance with really.

You need to speak to a modified car specialist.

They way we used to do it (again 10 years ago) was simply just add a percentage on. Example a remap that increased bhp by 20% we would stick on a load of about 20% on the premium (if we were doing things "by the book").

Back then there wasn't to much in the way (or no where near as much as today) companies that specialised in modified cars. The numbers back then suggested that people who modified their cars, were members of owners clubs etc paid more care to their cars and were less likely to claim. (In general we were told to insured cars cheaper that were modified than their standard counterparts)- Obviously a crazy power increase would effect the premium.

I would try Greenlight, Adrian Flux, KeithMichaels those types of companies- I assume Chris Knott here also do modified car insurance. I don't know if these go-compare websites are set up to look at modified car insurance? I thought they were more for the masses.

Tell them after they have quoted you that you forgot to mention that you are part of an "owners club" and you might get another 5-10% off the quote.

Remember I only worked for one insurance company for 5 years back in 2002- so perhaps alot of things have changed since then.

I'm with LV..they charged me £25 extra for re-map/alloy wheels/LSD/steering mods/exhaust mod etc etc

LV wanted £690 without the remap, weren't willing to consider a remap

I assume you must be less than 85 years old without a 25 year unblemished record?
