Weight loss tips?

Joined a gym at the weekend. My goal to lower my BMI.
I'm in absolute pain today.

Did two sets on the tread mill 20 mins each. Hard work and only used up 220 calories. Less than the amount of calories in a hot chocolate.... Makes you think twice what you chuck in your mouth.

The 5.30pm diet is a great idea especially if you suffer from reflux. Worked for me until I went on holiday.... Now resumed.

Rialas, its very simple for you - cut out your milky coffees and your BMI will come down rapidly :D One of those probably equates to your gym session - or more. I recently tried an iced coffee fron Neros with half the milk powder to lower the cals - tasted bloody awful so don't recommend that tactic.

Yuk. You're not wrong. I'd rather have a Greek coffee

I just cut out the empty calories. Such as sugary candy, Really cut back on the bread, beer. White rice starchy sort of foods. I have a bacon and egg breakfast. A light no bread lunch. Fish, chicken, Burger, Or steak and veg dinner. So with out going hungry or feeling like I'm missing out. I've dropped 7 Kilo's in about 2 months. My BP is lower, Along with the cholesterol. All without diet food. Could have gotten a little more radical and lost more than that a little quicker. But I don't want to do the yoyo thing. Where one burns out then craves bad things and falls off the wagon.

I think BMI is a dangerous and irresponsible way of assessing health and weight classification.

It takes nothing into consideration other than height and weight. I'm an ex-marine, enjoy the gym and weight training. I'm classed as obese according to BMI, but thats due to muscle, making my weight far too high for my height. This will be the same for most gym goers (that lift weights). Now, i see this as a compliment, and just shows that i'm carrying a decent amount of lean mass, but if a physically active female, say swimmer, runner etc, i'm sure their BMI would also not be in the 'normal' range which could lead them to have 'weight issues' etc

ive been training for 10 years now so weight loss and losing weight fast/putting weight on is my forte, how much weight loss are you thinking??? without reading the whole thread, consider doing light weight workout to tone the body? but imo these fad diets are unhealthy...

lots of sleep, good quality work outs, maybe even take up boxercise?? boxing is an amazing workout... 10 years of doing it has left me with a body with literally no fat, just lean muscle.

if you goals are pure weight loss then i guess dieting will help but it will be a slow course. BTW my BMI firmly put me firmly in the over weight category, yet im the complete opposite of the scale.

As per the above, I have a BMI of 32 which is morbedly obese. :? Being able to bench 1.5 times my own body weight is probably a factor though. :D

I decided to eat paleo (well pretty much) about 7 weeks ago and have lost a stone... still have the odd takeaway at weekends (no rice or naans though) and have my fair share (ahem!) of wine on fri, sat, sun, so not bad going so far. Feel better for it as well.

By the way I haven't embarked on any of this exercise malarkey, although I do admit maybe I should :)

Adding a bit of :fuelfire: Some years ago I had fantastic results from following the Atkins Diet - lost 1 and a half stone in a few weeks and 3 stones overall. There are some negatives talked about the diet but i found it worked for me as it was possible to eat quite a lot of certain foods so never hungry. I had celery and cheese as snacks and came off the caffiene in coffee tea and drinks - no alcohol too (or small amounts)
basically a low carb diet - might be worth a trawl on the web?

i'm not sure diets are a waste of time if you're over weight. a chocolate bar is probably the equivalent of an hour's running. so if you are actually over weight then you probably will benefit from losing weight through diet before you start the exercise, plus the weight loss gives you a bit of a kick in the right direction.

ultimately though you have to have the willpower, or it'll go straight back on.

My friend went on a cake diet. He just ate cakes when he was hungry instead of meals. Overall consumed less calories, felt satisfied with what he was eating and lost weight. No doubt rubbish nutritionally. Talking of cakes where the heck has Kirsty got to?!

Having been on the verge of being thin again for the last fifteen years or so, I started swimming regularly about 3 years ago. Made quite a differnce to my waist line although still a bit barrel chested above.

Currently do 20 mins lane swimming mon-fri at 0630am (which gets quite competitive) on the way to work and have a bowl of cereal at my desk whilst the PC is firing up.

Having been inspired by the Olympics and desiring Jessica Ennis's six pack. (I'll rephrase that as the wife is in earshot) I desire a six pack of my own like Jessica Ennis's, and have started to swim wholly front crawl rather than just breast stroke. It is really taking it out of me but in the the last 4 days I am sure that my stomach feels a bit tighter.

Diet is generally pretty good but tonight I found a bar of white chocolate that has been missing for months and now feeling guilty after reading this thread!

Need to get out more on my bike but I always seem to end up with a sore arse! (I guess I need to get the saddle put back on  )

I also race sailing dinghies but that really only gets physical when the wind is up but I guess it keeps me moving.

Not sure I could hack the gym culture. It definitely motivates me when there are others in the swim lane to pace myself against.

As others have said it is achieving the right diet/exercise balance and not putting off what you should start today. It is not difficult to make time for exercise. I have to get up earlier to go swimming but I am only 5 or ten minutes later getting into the office.

Managed to finish work early today and got out on my bike with SWMBO, we did just over 20 miles at a moderate pace, including part of the Olympic road race course which is close to where we live. We are both looking to get back into shape and the plan is to do at least 3 cycle rides a week like we used to a few years ago. I now need to resist the temptation to raid all the high carb things in the fridge, as I have post exercise munchies ...

It feels like the whole nation has been motivated by the Olympics. On my drive home I'm seeing way more runners and cyclists than ever before. This can only be good.

But for how long...
I just had a thought, a thread could be started for those of us that want to drop a pound or two and just lazy, we could all report our efforts (regularly) and encourage each other..a sort of forum cyber boot camp?

Sounds like a great idea, I just started a blog on my goal. Haven't decided to make it public yet, but just filling it in is keeping me on the straight and narrow.
