Weeping rear shock absorbers

Hi all,

I've just noticed that in addition to my worn RTABs the rear shock absorbers are weeping. Not gushing oil, but a definite stain on the top 3 inches or so. What would be the advice? Replace now or wait until they're properly leaking? I'm trying to solve poor floaty handling and at the moment everything wrong is with the rear of the vehicle and I'm nearly at £800 to fix it :(

Hi again,

I've got a couple of rear shocks off my M coupe. They look used but are not weeping and were on the car from new to just under 28,000 miles.

I replaced my original suspension with KW V3s and am unlikely to want to refit the OE shocks.

Not sure if the coupe and roadster use the same rear shocks, but if they do, feel free to get in touch if you're interested. Not sure what going rate for used shocks is, but I'll definitely price to sell and it'll be much cheaper than buying new if you're a bit strapped at the moment.

While you're replacing the rear shocks, I'd highly recommend fitting something like the Rogue Engineering top-mounts. It means dismantling most of the inside of your boot to get to the suspension turrets (but you'd have to do that anyway if you were replacing the shocks). However the benefit of fitting the RE top-mounts is that any future removal of the shocks won't require you to dismantle your boot lining again because you'll be able to get access to the top bolts from under the wheel arch. Plus, they provide a bit of reinforcement for the suspension turret. Here's a link:

Many thanks for the offer of your suspension - your car's covered similar mileage to mine and given the labor to swap the shocks, I think I may as well bite the bullet and go for new. The shocks are £315+VAT from BMW, but I've found the Bilstein B6 Sport shock absorbers P/N 24141680 should be the same as stock and they are £290 delivered for the pair. Can anyone confirm if these are the OE shocks? At nearly £100 less it makes sense to get these...

OE shocks were supplied by Sachs/Boge.

I replaced my original stockers with Bilstein HDs at 42k miles. They should be good for 100k or more and were a perfect complement to the stock springs.
 
first ....... need to get them changed, weeping shocks are an MOT fail and, leaking seals will never get better.

New items are easy to fit and not that expensive, unless you are going for high end racing items. :D

You're welcome Steve.

Don't blame you going for new units if you can buy them for that price. I'd thought you were going down the DIY route, but I agree that if you're having to factor in labour there's no point in fitting a used item that might develop problems sooner rather than later.
