Weekend Away - Recommendations

The mrs wants to get away for the weekend but I'm at a bit of a loss as to where to go.

She wants a spa hotel preferably with some decent shops nearby and I just want a good restaurant.

Some tourist attractions nearby for somewhere to go in the day would be nice too.

Budget of say £250 a night. Any recommendations?

Have a look at mr and mrs smith website. Always good for some ideas and inspiration. I've booked with them and never been dissapointed.

What kind of distance are you prepared to travel... and from where. I'm guessing South Wales, but thought best to check...

Plenty of scope in the Cotswolds. South Cotswolds - shopping in Bath or Bristol, further in Cheltenham or Oxford...

I actually went to Jersey for a weekend in January and stayed at the Grand Jersey Hotel on the Seafront. The Spa was amazing, had the best massage there.

Hilton DoubleTree Chester - Spa hotel.

2 mins from chester in a cab - 15 mins walking distance to town.

Chester Zoo, Blue Planet Aquarium, Chester races (but you'll need to get the hotel booked sharpish if its a race weekend). Good shopping for retail therapy.

If you are meat eaters book at 'Upstairs at the Grill' or for Thai food the 'Siam'. If you want a bit cheaper Hickories is on the river and is about the best combination of value/food in the city.

Snowdonia not far away if you fancy getting out for a walk but there are plenty of nice places to have a wander around in the city (walk the complete walls is about 2 miles).

Also heard that the Spa at The Sanderson hotel on Berners St - Just off Oxford St in London is very good. Bit pricey though. But you'll have shops and touristy stuff nearby.

If you can stretch to a weekend in Marrakesh then I can highly recommend "Les Bain du Marrakesh" - amazing and pretty cheap. Looks like a celebby place and things like a private couple's hammam :D are very reasonably priced. The market and atmosphere pretty fun for a weekend. Food places are nice also.

I think for £250 a night the abroad suggestions aren't what he meant.

http://www.lakevyrnwyhotel.co.uk/ is in a gorgeous location but not near any busy shops.

http://www.accorhotels.com/gb/hotel-6629-mercure-shrewsbury-albrighton-hall-hotel-and-spa/index.shtml - Albrighton Hall hotel & spa, with Shrewsbury shopping on the doorstep.

Or there is Ludlow, the foodie capital of Shropshire and has some great hotels too.

How about Bath? I'm assuming there's some decent spa's there since it's famous for them in the past.

St Ives is a great place to stay  lots of bars, pubs and
good restaurant.
Not stayed here myself but has good reviews

Bath is lovlely....but I agree, look on Mr & Mrs Smith website.....

Sanderson is good, but St Martins Lane is better.....

So many opinions, but whatever you do, don't read Trip Advisor anymore, too much scandal on it about other hoteliers writing about other hotels etc...

London, park plaza hotel is fricken amazing!! Rooms are lovely and proper modern :D

I can vouch for Park Plaza, just over Westminster Bridge this is the view out of the front;

Booking through bestratebeds was cheapest for me at about £120/night for the room with B&B.

Old Course Hotel St Andrews is good if the budget can stretch. Or, Crief Hydro is good, should be within budget.

Both would be a good weekend escape

Brilliant, thanks for all the replies guys!

Plenty of ideas for me to look at.

I'm liking the thought of The Cotswolds or possibly the lake district.

There's an amazing hotel (The Langdale) in the lakes but i can't get availability for the room i want!

Not really after London or anything too "city" based.

This is looking like the favourite now! Have you stayed there yourself? Is the MPW restaurant worth a visit or is it better to eat out?
